I think those interviewees sometimes laugh because they have been so mentally traumatized since childhood, it's a survival reaction.

I watched the whole 19 minutes.  Very interesting. I'd  like  my kids to see this.

Re. Laughing about bad things......
Just today I was talking to a fireman and the topic of news reporters and cameras came up.
He said that many times they laugh and joke in tragic situations as a way of dealing with the stress.
But when reporters are on scene they have to stifle themselves, for obvious reasons.
