When do gas rings go bad?
« on: June 09, 2017, 10:37:43 PM »
I've seen YT videos where if you stand the BCG on end, good gas rings will not allow the bolt to push into the carrier by gravity. This last time I cleaned the nickle boron BCG, the carrier slowly slid down the bolt. I asked an expert, and he said the gas rings are fine unless the bolt does not cycle indicating that the gas is escaping past the bolt. So when should the gas rings be replaced?

On a duty or defensive weapon you should NOT wait until the weapon fails to cycle.  This is just poor SOP.  As a guideline, if the carrier collapses on the bolt under its own weight then you should change the gas rings.  The carrier will often run for some time after this, but it is on its way to failure and new rings are cheap insurance.
