No more sheriff's dept at the Airport

The Sheriff's deputies are getting re-assigned or pink slipped. Meanwhile Securitas (aka HPD's fired-est) still has the 35 million per year contract. I don't recall the Deputies getting in trouble for a taxi cab bribery scandal or escalating a "please move" request into wasting a family dog in front of a bunch of kids.

Rent-a-cops who got fired from the force and are constantly getting busted for greed and stupidity still get to carry, but I can't because why?

If some emotional midget came up to my family and started shouting in my face and my dog did nothing then the dog is worthless. What other profession allows the hiring of proven screw ups and somehow avoids all liability when it comes to deadly force?

They aren't there for public safety, but to extract public wealth. Incompetence is cheaper than hiring real professionals and the corruption at the state level allows it to continue.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to clarify. I meant it's cheaper for Securitas to hire incompetents than proven professionals, and it's highly doubtful that any of that savings is passed on to the taxpayers. My guess is when you add up the external cost of investigations and lawsuits vs. training/pensions/benefits then going back to Sheriff's Dept would probably break even or be a better deal. That and a much better experience for the airport users since their security is accountable the public, as well as a better experience for the officers since they aren't getting nickel and dimed by a greedy corporation.

There are sheriffs they fall under the state department of public safety.

Sheriffs are elected and answer to the people. What we have is cronie appointed law enforcement.

Sheriffs are elected and answer to the people. What we have is cronie appointed law enforcement.

They are glorified court clerks who serve people subpoenas, transport detainees, etc.  They are basically an auxiliary of the police department.

work in conjunction with other federal, state, and county law enforcement agencies to provide for the

So we know about the "deputy" sheriffs. Who's the "sheriff"? You know, the guy who deputizes his deputies?

This is as close as you're going to find to a Sheriff:

Uh huh. That page refers to this page: http://dps.hawaii.gov/about/divisions/law-enforcement-division/sheriff-division/

Where the term "sheriffs" is used twice, and the term "deputy sheriffs" is used twice, apparently interchangeably. Please excuse me, but for a moment I guess I forgot this is Hawaii, and any semblance of logic or reason is unlikely to appear in anything having to do with government. Just because the 49 other states make a clear distinction between "sheriff" and "deputy sheriff"...

This is the current state sheriff. That is the deputy director of law enforcement for all state law enforcement.

Thanks.  That explains why there was no State Sheriff Division Administrator.listed on the website.  Just the Law Enforcement Division Deputy Director.

I guess they hadn't had time to update it since the new Sheriff was appointed Jun 17th.

Interesting that the headline calls him the new Sheriff, but in the article it gives the correct title:  State Sheriff Division Administrator.

"Real" sheriffs, as was mentioned in an earlier post, are elected officials.  Our state has to do everything different!
