I volunteered for the first time with HRA to help with the Shooting Sports Fair this past weekend. It was hard work and a good experience. I helped with the clean up, setup, and ran the bullpup station. I got to meet a lot of great people from HRA, and a bunch from here, and saw how much work, planning, and coordination it took to make the fair enjoyable for everyone. I put in 15 hours, but there were some dedicated individuals that put in 40+ hours and have done this for many years. Daniel from KGS loaned about 20 of his rifles and pistols from his store and others brought their collections. Although there were about 40 volunteers, we were still short handed and could use more help. NRA instructors, setup/cleanup crews, RSO's, magazine loaders, target makers, greeters, logistics, and lots of other ways to help. All of the proceeds are returned back o the firearms community through the Friends of the NRA, and other activities and organizations.
I just put this out there to show that the HRA does do a lot of good things and it takes volunteers to make it happen. Some people, myself included, think that the HRA is ineffective or not paying attention to our political concerns. But politics is only one piece of the puzzle and there is a lot of work to be done.
If you are looking to volunteer opportunities, then join the HRA (
www.hawaiirifleassociation.org) and participate in the activities and network with people. Make suggestions and lead projects. A lot more help is needed for next year's shooting sports fair. I think they'll be more attentive to your needs if you help out and work with them.
