Guys, stop obsessing over the Mayan calendar. As I explain in my book, Tom Explains it All, this was a simple case of tenure run amok. There was an office of calendars, a lifetime appointment, in the Mayan central leadership. Itchiklul (translated hereafter as "Bob) was the last appointee to that station before the Mayans' unfortunate encounter with nosy Europeans. Bob lived to an unprecedented 103 years old (by our calendar), and until his dying day, he kept the entire staff of 13 (a lucky Prime number in Mayan culture) working 16 hour days generating new calendars. The monarchs during his tenure each had a fondness for the old fart and were content to allow him his obsession, realizing that once he eventually did die, there would be no reason to replace him for generations to come. The resources he and his staff consumed would then be diverted to an improved health care package for the priests and royalty.
