Remington SPS stainless or Ruger American Predator

Thinking about picking either one of these up in 223 for punching paper at KHSC. Any recommendations?

if you are only going to punch paper at KHSC and nothing else, get the Ruger
the Remington is a better rifle, but if its only to punch paper at 100 yards, why spend twice the money when the Ruger will do almost as good as the SPS
I have 3 American rifles: .223, .308 predator, and .22LR.  for KHSC they do very well

That's what i was leaning towards even though I'm a lefty. What kind of groups do you get with 52-55gr fodder? :shaka:

Also considering getting an AR target upper. Thinking an 18" heavy barrel, mid length. RRA has some nice ones but $770.00. Armalite has a nice one as well for $600, free shipping...... decisions decisions! :geekdanc:

I have a buddy who has a standard Ruger American (Not Predator) in .308 and it shoots very nice 3 round groups at 100 yards. Very impressive for the price. However, the barrel gets hot quickly and POA changes after 8 - 10 rounds. This is to be expected with a hunting rifle. Not sure the diameter of the Predator barrel. I own a Remington 700 in .223 with the 5R bull barrel and I can shoot a lot without the barrel changing POA. Don't get me wrong, I am not putting down the Ruger. It's a great rifle for the price. Just want to offer up my observations.

I don't reload .223, so with federal bulk ammo I'll get about average 1.5" groups @ 100yds.  occasionally I'll get a sub-MOA group but that's not the average.
my .223 is the regular American rifle, thin tapered barrel.  like Inspector pointed out, it gets hot after a few rounds and POI drifts some.
the Predator and Ranch rifles have a "medium heavy" barrel.  not quite a bull barrel, but heavier than their regular tapered barrel

I bought the rifle to be a range plinker I could use cheap ammo to shoot and is easy to clean and maintain, and shoot at least decent groups
that's why I got the Ruger American rifle

you might also consider the Ruger American Ranch rifle in 5.56
I think the Ranch is the only American rifle chambered for 5.56, all the other Americans (the Predator included) is in .223
