What else besides 100 yards?
« on: July 02, 2017, 08:23:45 PM »
This probably goin be one odd question especially since I've never been on the rifle range before. Anyways, Is there any closer distance for the targets that can be set at besides 100 yards? My Labradar (chrono) can only give readings from 40-60 yards if reloading with .223 boat tails. And depending on the weight too. If get 50 yards, goin be perfect for my load development. And for me first timer practice shooting too. After I find the most accurate load, and I'm sure most of it will depend on the shooter..lol, then I go practice with the 100. Gonna zero in with factory kind ammo first. Practice with those for a little while then use the reloads..

Thanks

Rifle range standard positions are 50 and 100 yds.  A few lanes have 25 yds, but those are for special uses.

Rob,
They have cheap frames at SEC. Don't forget eye and ear protection. There were a number of newbies that showed up yesterday without either or frame.

Do you plan to be at the range on July 4th (open 8 am to 4 pm)? Sounds like ren will be there. I have a bunch of 223 that I didn't use yesterday so maybe I'll be there in the morning. I'll also work on loading a bunch of AK rounds.

Can anyone tell me how busy it gets on July 4th? No better way to celebrate our freedom...

You got a Labradar? That's pretty baller. Can you do a review of it when you get a chance? I'm curious if it works well at Koko Head given that there are a lot of people shooting simultaneously

Thanks for the help guys. Greatly appreciated. Will remember to bring all safety stuffs before I come down. Gonna make a check list. Oldfart, I neva make the frames yet. Goin buy the material this week. Though, I most likely gonna swing by with my son at the range on the 4th jus to check it out. Not goin shoot yet. Hopefully I get to meet some of you guys. I've been to the range long, long time ago. Only the pistol side though as I own a few pistols. But never the rifle side. Gonna make this one active hobby from now on. Always wanted too but just never have time. Now my kids is all grown and in their teens, I get time now.. lol.. TooFewPews, I'll do a review of the Laradar. Anyone like try em out I no mind too. The bigger caliber from .308 and up the company said can pick up to 100 yards.  Get the distance in calibers here.. http://mylabradar.com/#FAQ

Nice unit!!! Wait...

Seriously tho, the rifle range has pukas at 50 yards as well as 100 yards. And, if you are on the far right side of the rifle range there are a few places where the pukas are at 25 yards. But be careful if shooting at the 25 yard targets as I have had one of the RSO's (most of us know who I am talking about) tell me I can only use the 25 yard target for sighting in and then have to move it back out to 50 yards.

Ooooops

Didn't see all the replies before I replied. Oh well.

The rifle range has targets you can borrow until you make one (as long as you ask nicely). I would suggest SEC for their $15 frames but now that I think about it, they might be closed for the week while they do inventory.

....
A few years back, I made a pistol frame for my coworker.
I figger I might as well make 2 and keep one for me.
IIRC the cost of the materials was more than $30 so $15 is right about the same thing.

Yesterday I was shooting next to a guy that had to salvage a frame from the trash pile.
I think it was an SEC frame. It was peppered with pukas and the bottom crossmember was shot in half.
I helped him tape the poor thing back together again. LOL

There's nothing that can't be fixed with a roll of duct tape and a paper clip.

The ROs have a secret stash of abandoned frames hiding in the rafters.

About the rifle frames, I made two frames at 80" max this past weekend. Cost was about 15$ for 4 2x2 8 footers. Anyways, is there a certain amount and way of targets can be placed on the frame? And can the cardboard backing be stapled from the top to bottom? Well before the feet that goes in the pipes of course. I know can't be no human or animal type shaped targets too if I remember.  Back when I use to go shooting at the pistol side. I thought I read somewhere that can't place the targets on top of each other. But side by side? Just want to be ready when I get there this Sunday. Might go Saturday too though probably at around noon. Wish I could have made it there this past Sunday...

I've seen all types at the range. As long as the frames fit into the holes, it's allowed AFAIK. I've given up using cardboard and make my own targets using white card stock and red stickers. The wind and rain likes to rip the targets off the wet cardboard.

Metal targets for .22 are allowed at 50 yards. I place my metal targets about 10 feet past the 100 yard line.

I use clear packaging tape to keep my targets attached to the cardboard.  I also use drywall screws to keep the cardboard attached to the frame.  The wind has pushed out my staples more than once.

How many targets depends on the size you want to use.  I sometimes put 2 small ones side by side on a couple of rows and a single larger target on the others.

Stacking paper targets on one target frame at the rifle side is allowed.

Just make sure the legs are the right length below the bottom horizontal 2x2 and set apart the right distance.  As long as the target fits the pipes in the ground, what's above that is relatively open design.  Taper the legs at the end to make it easier if the fit isn't exact.  I use a small wood plane and knock off the corners for about 6-8 inches of rounded legs.

I've seen targets 3 times wider than the plans say and only 3-4 feet tall.  I assume that's easier for transporting.  I use the spec'ed width but only 5 feet tall so they fit in my Tacoma's bed with the gate closed.

Over time, you'll see what works for you.  As long as you have a frame that holds together and fits in the pipes, you'll be able to get it to work.

When I'm shooting with friends, I use a sharpie and write row numbers on the cardboard.  Just something simple so we know which targets are ours.

Alright.. got it guys.. thanks.  I rounded the corners with a 1/4" round bit with the router. 2x2 measuring diagonally is 2". After I ran the router, it's now 1-3/4". Hopefully that's enough to fit the pipe stands?

They have test pipes in front of the RSO office to try out the frame without running out to the target line.

Went again today.. Stayed there pretty long. From morning to afternoon. Wife and daughter (son never come today) was so bored they left..lol.. Was shooting more load developments today. Kinda liking Varget too at a higher dose though registering 2670 average on the 16.5" barrel. Compared to the BlackHills registering at 2450 average on the same barrel. No pressure signs. Will post some pictures later. Anyways, lots of nice people at the range. Nice seeing braddahs that I know too. See you guys next weekend.. :shaka:

Aloha,
