The Beginning of the Hurricane Season 2017
« on: July 13, 2017, 02:24:00 PM »
Well, June 1, 2017 was the official beginning of the 2017 hurricane season.

Already we see the first named hurricane of the season that is coming our way. Fernanda. It is expected to become a category 4 hurricane. According to the model we may feel some of the effects of this storm. Whether it will be severe or not remains to be seen. Or it could veer away and we may not see any effects. But no matter how it plays out, we all need to be prepared. I hope all of you are already prepared and don't have to do any last minute shopping. It sucks to have to shop the last few days before a big storm as the crowds can be tough to deal with. So if you still need to pick up a few things in order to be prepared, I suggest you do it now while you have the time and the crowds are still manageable.

Good reminder to drag the generator out and run it.  Should probably drain the old "stabilized" gas and get fresh ethanol free while I am at it.

I picked up 25 gals of gas and a new bottle of marine StaBil on Monday.  I have 4 full 5 gal propane bottles, but going to fill up the 4 empties I have and get another 10 gals of gas.  As long as I have gas for the generators and propane for the Bosch on demand water heater, I am good to go.  Not worried about water as my water tank has about 9000 gals in it and a hurricane or TS will bring more water.

What do you use to "kick" your bosch?
I got a Taketa JR and I use one of those car jump units (LIght, air  compressor , jumpstart, phone charger AC...

I start the generator and switch the water heater and pump to generator power.

...
I had neglected to start my gen for about 2 or 3 months....it wouldn't start.
Gas was somewhat low. Checked the spark plug and shot carb cleaner in the cylinder to prime it.
It started right up.

Also went Costco to buy toilet paper... because I really was running low.

Alright, alright. I haven't fired mine up since the end of last season either.
I have the day off so I will go "service Genny".
ps, I  got plenty P but have pretty much "rotated" much of my stock and will be visiting Costco as well.
BTW, I love that they now take the CC that's "In my wallet" so's I get dem air miles.  :D

Mine fired up after a dozen pulls Saturday, was mildly surprised.  Ran it for 20 min or so and put it under load to make sure the Honda load sensing worked.  Gas is still old, need to dump the old stored stuff into the cars (of course we both recently filled up) once I get some burned down.  Ethanol free is becoming more available around here, not just at the harbor.

I installed an in line valve before the carb.   8)
Opened valve, wait 10 seconds, one soft prime pull and the first real pull fired it up as usual.

Checked and all's good, turned off valve and fiddled with choke to make sure all gas was burned.
I think the shut off valve and really emptying the float bowl by fiddling with the choke to keep it running as long as possible  after gas supply shut off has a lot to do with one pull starts as you burn all  the gas out and you don't get "turpentine" build up from gas going meh.  :geekdanc:
I now have ethanol free right down the road which was previously 16 miles away at the Hygenic store.

I like the idea of running the carb dry.

Not that our generators are the same, but what valve did you use?  Will have to check the thing out to see what sort of line runs from tank to carb.

This chart shows ag production for each island.  Oahu has about 900,000 people, not counting visitors which will add another 300,000 or so on any given day.  The Big Island had about 150,000 people and far far less visitors on any given day.  My conclusion is Oahu will run out of food way before the Big Island.  Also, most properties here are big so a lot of people grow or raise at least some type of food.  People here refer to 10-20,000 sf size lots as postage stamp lots.

Few problems, Not all of that food will be in season, a lot of it is export crops,  and do you think the powers that be wont seize all that food for the greater good ?

Only few crops are strictly seasonal, lychee and soursop come to mind.  Mango, papaya, avocado and coconut are available year round and almost all vegetables.  If we are talking about Hawaii being cut off from shipping, we won't be exporting anything.  If it is possible to export, then you can also import.  Bottom line is if all the islands got hit bad, Oahu would be the one that will be in the most dire circumstances, mostly due to its large population.  So no, it would not be the same for all islands.

Most people can go 2 weeks eating just one regular meal a day.   Probably more beneficial for them, myself included.
