I don't think the media is getting its story straight.
When I fly I remember TSA telling us we can't bring liquids on board. They tell me to drink it or toss it.
I think that's what they were telling this kid.
The meth could've put more AMERICAN lives in danger.

Saw this story over the weekend on 20/20 or Nightline -- can't remember which.

The video is damning for the agents.  They looked at each other and grinned when they told the kid to take a drink.  There was no audio, but the motions by the agents were obvious.  They didn't give the teen the option to decide if he should drink.  They said take a drink, then said take another.  The teen complied.

The two bottles were "water" and "apple juice", but both had the exact same golden tint.  It was obvious these were not what they advertised.

The problem is protocol.  The protocol is to request a test kit, then verify the contents contain drugs directly.  Protocol doesn't include asking border crossers to consume the contents when drugs are suspected.

There was more than enough reason to suspect drugs in the bottles.  Telling him to drink was out of line and the cause of the teen's death.

One million dollars is a bit much for a teen who was breaking the laws of two countries.  Hopefully this prevents future acts of carelessness by border guards.

The question is, Did they force him to drink it, Could he of said no.

He made the choice to try and hide his crime and killed himself.

Though they could have tested it anyway after and get medical attention if they really suspected it was drugs. But I bear no sympathy for the boy.

Without sound it would be hard to prove what they were thinking. Maybe they were grinning about something else for example.

If he's being forced to play mule for the drug gangs, under threat of death or injury to himself or his family, he really doesn't have much choice but to drink and hope for the best.

He may not even understand the risk involved, perhaps not knowing the concentration of meth in the liquid someone else mixed up for him.

Again, the guards were out of line asking him to drink what was pretty obviously not water.  They should have done a chemical test, not a taste test.

I definitely smell "media spin" all over this.

Regarding the behavior of the officers, I have to believe that they deal with that stuff dozens of times a day and this is just one.  I bet in any of your professions, you come across "that person" who just makes you   Well, if this kid was being threatened with the lives of his sister at stake, well, he still has a choice.  Albeit an unpleasant choice.  I don't see the officers forcing him to drink it.  Could the officers have handled it better?  Maybe to even probably.  Worth getting disciplinary action against?  IMO, I don't think so.

With the speculation of the kid doing this under the threat of his family aside, the saying "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" comes to mind.

You're welcome to your opinion, but protocol is protocol,

The agents are still employed, and the agency admitted they would have had to show incompetence or malice in their making him drink for it to be punishable.

For now, additional training and a review of policies and protocols is deemed sufficient ..... oh, and a $1 million settlement to the family, even though "nobody did anything wrong."
