Pillar installation - cost
« on: September 27, 2017, 08:18:14 PM »
Locally, how much does it generally cost to install pillars?

Generally, how much more to bed the action?

I don't know if this matters but the rifle is a 308 savage 10 fcp McMillan (A5)

I'm trying to figure out if I should pillar bed the stock...or sell it and get a chassis or  something like a HS precision which has an alum "plate".  My understanding is a chassis or a stock with a plate, bedding is not needed.....or is optional.

(I read a review that the savage 10 fcp hs precision is better out of the box but the reviewer would choose the McMillan and bed it.  He did not think that installing pillars was needed)

I'm leaning to skipping the pillars and doing the glass bedding myself....after practicing on my 22 rifles

I've seen the glass bedding product available at SEC.

I'd estimate a $100 job.
Installing pillars is jsut a few step more than bedding.
I had a Savage and did my own bedding along with pillars.

Rk - thanks for the heads up.  I'll check security this weekend

Ren - installing pillars looked very detailed from the little research I've done.   Are special equipment/tools needed?
How long from start to finish?  Would you do it again or hire Wayne at Pacific Custom Rifles?

I better do more research.

Tnx!

Tnx Heavies!

That is one of the first sites I skimmed thru....and is the one that got me worried about messing up my stock.

The midway video makes it look like a piece of cake

I would keep the McMillan and have it bedded. I have done several pillar and glass bedding jobs myself. All shoot well. For a stock of McMillan or Manners quality, I would pay a reputable professional even if that meant sending it to the mainland.

I use Marine-Tex for bedding. I look for steel sleeves or collars for the pillars.

I have no experience with his work. Hopefully someone who does can comment.

John Perreira does excellent work, he'll be at the gun show.  I haven't had any work done by Wayne, so I can't speak from experience but he's usually at the show.

Ha!

Got the gun yesterday for $580 shipped but it has a choate stock that looks similar to a McMillan

Seems to get decent reviews.   Need to research it more and negotiate a partial refund.
