First time at Koko head..
« on: February 27, 2012, 02:04:48 PM »
So I have been there before. As in once, like 9 years ago when I was 12. I bought my first gun not to long ago, can pick it up thursday and my freind who has owned before wants to go out there as well with me. Just want to know a few things.

1. Slugs are allowed on the rifle range? Yes or No?
2. I need to bring my own frame for the rifle range? Yes or No? Now I remember the pistol range has all sorts of little targets (steel plates) but do I need anything or can I just screw around and shoot them. Now on the rifle side I remember people having frames but we were shooting at the stuff way up on the hill like 225yds or whatever the distance is.

Thanks alot.

yes you can shoot slugs at the rifle range.  The Silhouette range is the range with all of the steel targets, it's only open sat/sun.  There is the bullseye pistol range which is open Wed-Sun, bring your own target stand for that one and no steel targets.   You should bring a target frame for the rifle range unless you intend to shoot out to 200yrds where there are a few steel targets.

Have fun

If you need to make your own frame go to www.khsc.info for the dimensions.  On the ad wall there is also a guy who builds them and sells the frames cheap.

You are also welcome to go to the wood junkpile and make your own.  Just that you gotta take it home!  I have done this twice this year. Just need staple gun.
If you plan to shoot slugs use the stuff from the junk pile and use a big piece of cardboard.  I use 24' x 48" and put pie plates on them.  Couple of times the boys
missed the plates and tore up the frame!

Make sure that you have your gun cased or boxed when you bring it up to the range or they will yell at you.

Uncase/unbox your gun only on the firing line or they will yell at you.

Slugs makes me assume that you are getting a shotgun. Do not try to shoot it at the pistol or Silhouette range. They will yell at you.

Ask for info or help from the range officers in the traffic vests. Ask questions and read the safety rules.

I have been yelled at once on the rifle range. I wonder if anyone else here has been yelled at?

Once on the pistol side when the RO did not like the angle the muzzle was elevated to.  He pointed out the holes in the overhead metal.

Point taken without offense.

I've gotten scolded, not yelled at.  I did something wrong, so I just nodded my head and it was all g.  Coffee on the ground and was about to blow over and I stepped about 30" over the line to try and save it.  Another time I cracked open my rifle case about 2" to see if the mags were in there.  Rules are rules.

Oh, if you go to the silhouette range, can you be cool and help set up the targets during the cease fire?  I hate that 5 people go out and 20 people watch.  :shaka:

Lol yeah I know no shotguns at the rifle range, thats more along the lines of common sense. So all the little steel targets are the far right (pistol side) If I remember right are only open on the weekend? Ok i'll check out the koko head site and figure out the frame sizes, im sure I got some spare wood around here. So I guess I more or less show up and just follow everyones lead when it comes to setting up the target and what not. Do I just bring the frame up with me and wait for a cease fire and take it out or do I need to be like 'Yo range officer i got this and is it cool to set it up!?" Now I can only have a total of 3 shots in my gun....really? two in the magazine one the chamber....yeah ok.. I just dont want to make a fool of myself...im sure everyone has at some point though...I have common sense so I know eyes&ears and keeping the barrel in a safe direction etc. As far as the pistol range goes, is the located near the skeet range?
Thanks all!

you can shoot shotgun at the rifle range.  I'd shoot slugs at your target, the closest target stands are at 50yrds so if you shoot buck or bird, you'll probably hit other people's targets.  Ask the range master first, but you usually can shoot your bird/buck shotgun into the berm on the left hand side of the rifle range.

Ask questions, listen to others, keep your muzzle pointing downrange at all times, even when un-casing your rifle.

You have to run out, DUCK and set up while under live fire.....JUST KIDDING!

Cease fire every 30 Minute intervals.  If I just missed the target setup I take out my 22 and shoot at all the shotgun shells on the ground.....or the Halekoa seed pods.

haha yeah that would be fun running out.. so does it need to be exactly 2x2 wood I have something a little under and I figure as long as the dimensions are good and it fits good in the stand then I am good to go right?

Holders are metal pipe stuck in the ground.  Too large and the legs won't go in.  When you make your frame you should probably cut two small wedges to tighten up the legs in the pipes.

Yeah I would add/remove material inorder to get it to fit correct but the rest can just be whatever?

so does it need to be exactly 2x2 wood

You can use 2x2 wood, but you will need to round the corners.  A router with a 1/2" corner round bit works great, otherwise you will get a good workout filing down the corners.

but the rest can just be whatever?

Yes, but I would recommend following the dimensions provided on Koko Head Shooting Range's website.

I'm hoping to get out there this weekend and it will be my first time at the range as well.  Do you think I will have any problems since my AKs bolt doesn't lock to the rear?  Should I get a chamber flag to be safe or can I just stick a piece of hard plastic in there and call it good enough?

a chamber flag would work or you could use a fired shell casing, i usually jus pick one up from the ground

So I threw one together real quick (rifle frame) well not real quick...could not find the correct bit size and a few other mishaps..so its like

______
            |
            |
______=bottom
|=the 12" legs. now the legs are not inline with the frame like say the frame is | this the legs are in the back so from the side it looks like ____
                                                                                                                                                                                                                       | and the part where it goes up is about an inch in from there the leg starts going down...ok. basically I screw the legs ontop of the frame..so there in line with the frame its self to meet the 12"1/2 inner di but there staggerd so there no below the frame but sit out in front of it..lol yeahh this makes no sense.
