I'm looking at getting a qd scope mount for my 308 "target" rifle and was wondering if that is a bad idea.

I googled and there were differing views....based on the type of rifle, what the rifle would be used for and how much money you have.

I don't have the money yet for my 308 to have it's own dedicated scope so I was thinking of using a qd mount for now.

With the qd, I could easily move my 1 good scope to my ruger predator 223 or ar if I wanted/needed to.  It's not something I would do often....maybe if my girls come along and we leave the 308 at home.

I understand I will need to re-zero when the scope is moved to a different rifle.

I was thinking of a qd in the 80-150 range like the Burris Pepr or an ADM for use at kokohead. 

Wnen I can get a better dedicated scope, maybe I'll go to talley mounts.

Eventual goal down the road is to try shooting out to 600 yards

(Right now the scope is in a cheap set of UTG qd mounts meant for a 22 that I had lying around and using on the 223 predator.  Using it on the 308 didn't seem like a good idea.....and I was right)

I don't have any direct experience with QD mounts but a very good friend of mine who is into hunting uses Leupold and Warne QD rings. He gets repeatable, consistent  results. He swears by both types.

I am a Warne ring fan myself even though I have not used their QD rings. Sorry I can't provide more info than this.

I read that in Europe they have been using qd for decades.

Hunters over there trust the return to zero and only mount the scope when they reach the hunting area!!  Granted, they may not be shooting that far, may get to go hunting more often and closer to home.

For me, I couldn't do that....not zero before a big event. Take off a day(s), get up early,  pack up the vehicle, drive out an 1 hr before dawn, stay all day till everyone bags one.....that would be sick if shots were missed because the scope was off so you end being out till sundown and the other guys are irritated......or worse you hit Bambi instead of a buck and your friends never fail to mention it.   (Don't ask.  I still think my dad lied about zeroing the scope)

I bought a QD mounts for my scope thinking I'll switch it between rifles.  I never did and just wound up buying scopes for each rifle.

QD mounts only work if you switch between similar rifle setups.  Scope height, stock length, comb height, etc may vary between rifles like AR15 compared to a Remington 700.

QD makes sense if you have a very expensive scope and you have similar rifles that you may only shoot a couple times a year.

I see your point about moving the scope around rifles that differ.

Hopefully, moving the scope around will be just a short term situation till I can get a dedicated scope for the 308

If for precision shooting, i would only use a one piece QD mount. I too thought it'd be a cool idea and bought a cheaper mount, Burris. I will not use a QD mount unless its a high quality one like the Badger Ordnance or Larue Tactical. My expeirence witht he cheaper units were not favorable.

Todd Hodnett (Magpul Precision) had the thinking that why buy several mediocre scopes for all your rifles. Why not buy one high quality scope and switch them with a QD mount on whatever you are shooting. See the Magpul "Art of the precision rifle" DVD for reference. He did mention the Larue mount I believe.

For the rifle you were shooting Thursday?

Had a larue qd mount on that scar I brought down. The safe I currently use has two sections devided in the middle and I have too many guns for the scar to fit in properly. I take the scope off and mount it everytime going to and from the range. It has always held zero with a single need to dial. Been doing this for about a year now. Highly recommend it although on the pricey side.

Therin lies the gift of AR multicaliber platforms with the same buttstock.

If i were to fiddle with this idea. I might stick with the ACE skeleton stock.  Available stock spacers can add 1/2" to LOP.  That is what I would experiment with, if AR variants are all you shoot.

A bolt action might get more complicated, depending on stock shapes, etc.  But, if i could afford a spiffy bolt action, would likely just get a scope for it alone and leave it be.

Sucks to have to place to target shoot other than air rifles in the back yard.

Yes, the rifle I was using on Thursday. 

I was thinking of taking off the picatinny rail going to a one piece dnz game reaper

Then I watched a brownells video and the smith talked about a rail being better if thinking about doing long range shooting since you can change to different moa rails.

I think I'm just going to get a good set of rings to put on the egw picatinny rail

I will get a dedicated scope.  I'm just waiting for Pigeonhunter to realize he really needs a ruger predator in 223 :-)
