So, what was the problem in case someone else encounters ?  Just crappy ammo?

A little bit of that mixed with a little bit of technique issues + a few more rounds through it. Got my 50+ year old mom shooting it no problems.

I may be obtuse, but fail to see how any sort of technique issue could cause a light primer strike. 

Limp wristing causing ejection issues, yes.
