Yes, it used to be planned on Kona side, by Waikoloa. But all the hotels/resorts complained about it, so I don't know where that plan is heading. Probably in the toilet.

On my previous visit at Stueb's Guns & Ammo in Hilo about a month ago, they mentioned to me that the plans were to have the range near Hilo side, up saddle road by mile marker 6.  He said something about it needing to get an approval from the DLNR board. And it seemed likely and that folks 'higher up' were serious about it.  Serious enough that resources were spent to bring in some contractor folks onsite to assess the cost of the project and some key people were invited to do some shooting up there for demonstration purposes.  Apparently they are looking at possibly a shooting distance of up to 200 yards.
That's what I know thus far.  Keeping my hopes high because we really need this!

Thanks for the info. I just moved from Oahu to big island, and now I don't have a legal way to shoot. I talked to someone and he said I should look into getting my hunting license. I have a wife and 2 daughters and I just want them to start shooting with me. I've heard about private land and that place that starts with an "m", but I don't want to drive too far from Hilo and I don't want to skirt the law. I even heard that big island law enforcement has a hard time training. I used to live in ewa , and x-ring was a "blessing" for us on the west side.

I totally hear ya!  Really sucks not having a legal place to practice here. My wife wants her own rifle and also wants to train with our home defense pistols, but there just isn't anything available until that range opens up.
For now, it's just "plinking" with airguns in the back yard for us lol.  My son wants to get into it too when he's a little older.
