AK47 Project
« on: March 26, 2018, 10:24:29 AM »
Finally getting around to an AK project that I had planned years ago.

Base gun is a Hungarian FEG SA-85 that I picked up from a friend who got it in an estate sale.  Condition appears to be unfired.  I was looking for a decent, but inexpensive stamped AK to start a project with and this gun was offered at a good price.

The same gun in this video:

I had thought about keeping as-is as I've heard that this style of gun can be collectible, but the current going rate isn't that high, so I decided to go ahead with the mods.

What I currently have on hand or ordered:

SLR Rifleworks 11.5" Keymod handguard with gas block picatinny rail
VLTOR AR15/M4 buttstock
Larue low mount for Aimpoint Micro

Will likely get some sort of AR style pistol grip and I'm thinking a B5 stock.

I would eventually like to have the muzzle threaded for a comp.  Comps I'm currently considering are the BattleComp (little pricey though) and the SLR Synergy Comp AK.  I might just try the gun as-is for a little while as well.

I just ordered the handguard, so hopefully will have it in about a week or so.  That's the main component that I need to get this project really going.

Open to suggestions for muzzle device, pistol grip and buttstock.

Fun. I had Dexter thread and install a muzzle brake on my AK. He did a great job.

I'm curious if you will change the fire control group.

Also, sounds like barrel isn't already threaded with a pinned cover. Mine wasn't so had to be threaded.

SLR rail shipped and should be here end of the week. I might have time to try the assembly this weekend, but prob not until I eat week sometime. Still have to get the stock and grip. Optic mount is somewhere in transit.

Spoke to John P today. He has a lot going on and declined the barrel threading work. Will try contacting Wayne.

Thanks!

So far I'm looking at:

SLR BCF and Comp AK ($85)
BattleComp ($200-220) - Likely not due to price
Arsenal OEM Comp ($25-30)

I'll add that PWS one.  I've shot the PWS on ARs and they seem awesome, but also one of the loudest I've shot.

The louder the better IMO.  If you're gonna use a comp you might as well be as obnoxious as possible lol.

You could apply that to you instead of comps. . .  ;D

I wasn't thinking about changing the FCG.  The trigger on this gun is a little heavier than my Arsenal.  I think I'm gonna shoot it a bunch first and see how things work in.  I took it apart last night.  The action was sluggish so Iubed the bolt thing and bolt carrier and the action was much smoother after that.  The old grease seemed to be gumming things up.  I suspected the guy who owned it never shot it.  The piston was PRISTINE!  Never seen one so bright and shiny.

Back to the FCG, since I am modding a lot of this gun, I'd be open to it.  This will be somewhat of a beater gun as well as I want to do more training with the AK.

Delivery on the rail delayed, likely won't be doing it this weekend.  No idea where the optic mount is after UPS "transferred" to USPS. . .  >:(

Been looking at other gear needed for the AK.  I have mags and a sling that I think will work with the stock sling loop and a buttstock with a QD swivel.  Been looking at chest rigs as well.  With ARs, I do pouches on my belt, but don't think the AK mags work well with the pouches that I do have.

For chest rigs, been looking at:

Beez Combat Systems
Strike Hard
US Grunt Gear

Leaning toward USGG. They are pricey, but they also have a 20% off sale through end of April.  I have a bunch of belts and pouches from them and they make great stuff.

Hope thats not UPS SurePost, because you might be waiting a few weeks if the USPS decides to throw that on a boat from Cali.  UPS trucks it across the country, then hands it to USPS for final delivery.  For Hawaii, that means they might throw it in a boat like the Parcel Pool (do they still call it that?) service.

I've had an item take literally over a month.  Free shipping sometimes just aint worth the hassle.

Unfortunately I think that's what it is.  I have returned Amazon items and the USPS person mentioned it would take a while based on the shipping label. She did mention the item would be shipped via boat from Hawaii to the mainland.  UPS' tracking lists the handoff point in CA, so. . . I elected the flat rate shipping option, and wasn't free either.

Not in any real rush.  Just figured the handguard was the main item to get the gun in "shooting order".  Never figured the optic mount would take 3-4 weeks.

Good luck, I've had both short-ish and very long wait times with items shipped like that.  Sometimes it goes on the boat, sometimes it doesnt.  If the tracking doesnt change for half a week or so, you'll know shes sailing on the ocean.  Either way, it takes longer than either UPS or USPS individually so boo to whoever shipped that to you like that and charged you for it.  On the mainland surepost isnt that slow, just like 1 day longer than ground.  Not for us.

It's been almost 10 days. . .  :(

Vendor is Larue.  I've ordered many times from them in the past and shipping was always fast.

Everything on order came in over the weekend.  Optic mount and SLR rail.  Have a guy lined up to help with threading of the barrel, so hopefully I'll have the gun up and shooting before too long.
