Imagine listening to and responding to other peoples' problems all day long. Gets old. I wouldn't want to do that. Hats off to those that choose to do so.

As with any profession, there are good and bad cops.

The problem with bad cops though they are generally protected to a certain degree under the law and only be investigated from within when internal affairs feels like it.

Regardless if a cop is good or bad, if they tell you to do something, you do it.  The situation will only escalate if you push back or say no.  Commands from cops go like this:

1) Ask
2) Tell
3) Make

So if the cop says "bend over and spread your cheeks so I can rape you"

then what?

You don't have to comply with illegal orders. We are citizens, not livestock.

Not to start a list, as that would be far too long and time consuming... David Codrea at The War on Guns, Ammoland, Oath Keepers, etc. usually has at least several instances every week of the "only ones" who engage in criminal activity... often with impunity. One has to wonder how many other criminal acts this cop and his buddies committed prior to being caught this one time.

Former Maui Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Theft Under Color of Law and Witness Tampering

News Release from US DoJ, April 19, 2018

Former police officer Anthony Maldonado, of Kahului, Maui, pleaded guilty today in federal court to one count of Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law in violation of Title 18, United States Code § 242, and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Witness Tampering in violation of Title 18, United States Code § 1512(k).

According to court documents and information presented in court, Officer Maldonado conducted a traffic stop at the Mala Wharf on Maui in September 2015.  He used the opportunity to steal approximately $1,800 in cash from the fanny pack of the person who he stopped.  When the victim later realized the cash was missing, he reported the theft to Maui police. After the report was filed, the defendant and four others attempted to bribe the victim to withdraw the complaint. Three co-defendants previously pled guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Witness Tampering.

“Law enforcement officers must uphold their pledge to protect the members of their communities and conduct themselves with honor,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General John Gore of the Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department will continue to enforce the law and protect the civil rights of all to be free from willful police misconduct.”

[Too bad the U.S. Attorneys Office doesn't consider the blanket "no issue" policy a willful deprivation of rights, which it obviously is.]

Here's one of Codrea's posts from today:

As a rule I despise cops,
I wold never call one for help as
I know they aren't supposed to protect
anyone, they just report and clean up the mess.
Here in Hawaii they deny you the right
to conceal carry just because they can.
I know they are not all animals,
and the job they have is difficult,
but they are to be feared, and not trusted.
They are agents of a government that has
allowed them to kill you as they see fit
and they have no penalties for doing so.
We have 450 Killers on my island, I'd like
to see that  cut in half.   I want to see cops that
are afraid to go to work. Then we'd be even.

A lot of stuff wrong here. If they were affraid to go to work that would be counter productive. The more fear there is the more stress and the poorer someone's decision making and the worse it is for everyone.

Cops don't just kill without consequence either so I don't know where you get that from.
Cops in America are the good guys. Doesn't mean they will always be the good guys and power should always be checked but for the most part, cops are our friends.

As I see it, it is not the cops per se but the situation and circumstance they are put in. We don't just expect soldiers experience war and come back unaffected. Cops see a lot of bad things and are put in a lot of situations where temptation arises. Maybe it is a sad commentary on the human species that just not that many of us, or none, are perfect enough to be that perfect cop we  want in our city. Agencies and groups are always trying to improve recruitment and training but you can only do so much. Most bad cops don't start out as bad cops I think. Often it is small steps down the bad path with initial wrongdoing being pretty minor things.

That's a near exact regurgitation of the typical leftist rationalization as to why criminals aren't really responsible for their choices to harm innocent people... "they couldn't help it" because their conditioning (childhood, peers, etc.) "made them do it". What a total pile of bullshit. Unless people have a true and serious mental illness of particular types they know full well that they are making decisions to engage in illegal and/or immoral or unethical behavior. Like these cops in New York. I'm sure these guys saw "a lot of bad things" handing out gun licenses to people that bribed them, so they could no longer distinguish right and wrong due to some fantasy version of PTSD. Maybe they believed that the laws prohibiting taking bribes in exchange for handing out the licenses was akin to racist segregation laws or laws that unconstitutionally infringe on a person's right to bear arms for self-defense and they were therefore morally justified to take bribes. Sure they did. Good to know these guys were allowed to carry while on their gifted bribe vacations here in Hawaii.

Ex-cop: NYPD gun license division was a bribery machine

https://nypost.com/2018/04/17/ex-cop-nypd-gun-license-division-was-a-bribery-machine/

A former city cop spilled his guts Tuesday, telling Manhattan jurors about years worth of bribes he and his fellow officers received for doling out gun permits — everything from cash, prostitutes and expensive watches to baseball memorabilia and exotic vacations.

David Villanueva, an ex-supervisor in the NYPD’s License Division, said he and other cops — including officers Richard Ochetel and Robert Espinel and Lt. Paul Dean — were on the take for years from so-called gun expeditors.

In exchange, the officers doled out pistol permits like candy — even to people who should not have had them, Villanueva said.

For the old timers, do you see a difference between cops attitudes a long time ago compared to now?  I imagine they were more community oriented and friendlier to the public in the past.

Los Angeles cops were always assholes in the sixties and seventies.

Had a couple guys I went to HS with become LAPD, and they were jerks back then.  Legalized power trips.

Cops I ran into in a small North Carolina town were jerks too, but my being from out of town might have had a lot to do with their attitude.  Definitely not officer friendly.

Nowhere did I say it was an excuse for anything. It just is what it is.

What I was saying about the bad behavior was only that it comes gradually. Most people don't suddenly go out and commit a serious crime. understanding this helps us figure out how to guard against it.

I am not that old so I can't offer opinion of cops 30+ years ago but I have one observation that might be an explanation. With bigger cities you have more anonymity and with smaller towns you have more of a connection to the people around you. More big cities and fewer smaller towns might explain a change in experiences. On the other side, video has really changed the accountability of officers so who knows which causes what.
