Puna residents urged to evacuate due to lava outbreak
« on: May 03, 2018, 05:10:53 PM »
Hope everyone has their bug-out bags packed.

Quote
Authorities are responding to a lava outbreak in Leilani Estates, where officers are going door-to-door to tell residents to evacuate.

Hawaii County Civil Defense is urging residents in the Puna community, home to about 10,000 residents, to get out now. The
American Red Cross of Hawaii has opened an emergency shelter at Pahoa Community Center.

Law enforcement sources tell Hawaii News Now that lava is being spotted in the community, including seeping out of cracks in the
road.

Residents and social media posts show plumes of smoke in the area.

Yup. Big news here. Staying at Kilauea Military Camp. The front desk lady said they had lots of calls for lodging. But most not military or DoD, so had to turn away. Lots of people here though. Might try and swing by the view point after dinner.

Not to minimize the struggles of those in Leilani Estates, where the breakout occurred, it is an event that the people in the area have dealt with in the past.  Big Islanders are pretty resilient, and for the most of the Puna District, and in South Hilo, life is just like any other day here.  As a community, we will come together to help those in need.

Let us know how much time passes before all the Gubernatorial candidates show up to get their pictures taken handling out bottled water.

Did you guys see the drone footage of the lava ?
Since there were helicopters there, isn't it illegal to be flying a drone in the area?

Maybe to add to the survival gear an oxygen producing machine.  This way you can stay there, even with the gas fumes.

If you live in an area that has military and civilian airspaces, you either need to call the control tower where you are piloting your drone to get permission/notify them, or you are prohibited from flying there at al - depends on how close to the runway you arel.  Being near Schofield myself, I'm in the restricted, not prohibited, area where I'd have to call them.

Volcanoes National Park, since it's a national park, prohibits the use of drones .... period.

So, if they aren't over the national park, and the area hasn't been restricted already, drones are legal.  If the drones stay within visual range of the operator, also required by law, there should not be any issues with airspace conflicts.

For those of you have been here for these type of eruptions before, how far North does the sulfur dioxide gases get at dangerous levels?  Is it worth prepping with a respirator with something like the 3M multi gas/vapor cartridges?  Granted these are not as good as a closed respirator with a tank of air but enough for an escape plan (100 ppm or less).

Do the levels ever get dangerously high outside of the immediate eruption area?

Answering my own question.....
This was addressed on the news a couple days ago.
If the area is under control of the emergency management agency, then it is illegal to be flying drones in the area.
Makes sense to me.

This event did make me re-evaluate my BOB.  After evaluations, nothing more needs to be added.  I mean I could always have more food and H2O, but then the BOB gets to heavy and wouldn't be called a Bug Out.

What I did think about is other events that would cause me to BOB.  As in my is security at home while I'm forced to evac.  Are all my  items safe as it can be?

It would be almost impossible for HPD to block off my area like how they're doing in Big Island.  Due to the vegetation there, it makes a natural barrier.  Vs. a metropolitan area where there are hundreds of roads and alleys to get into the blocked off area.

Yes, expect the scumbags to try and capitalize on others misery, from the looters to the politicians who are only concerned about their politics.  The Puna district, especially the lower Puna areas are pretty bad when it comes to crime.  A lot of drugs, which creates a lot of property and violent crime.  I do have empathy and compassion for the longtime residents who are trying to live life peacefully. Many buy land sight unseen and move to Hawaii (from the mainland).  They often have not done their due diligence on researching the area.

Here are some categories that are common in Puna District as a whole, but even more so in lower Puna.
- A lot of hippies, mostly caucasian mainlanders, where the draw of marijuana and that lifestyle is prominent in the Pahoa area.   They want to grow and smoke dope.
- A lot of "earthy crunchy" types who don't bathe and want to "get back to nature."  Primarily Vegetarian but most Vegan and they want to grow/raise their foods and also generally want to be off the grid.  They buy an acre or so of land and live in a shipping container or a shed.  They may or may not be here also for the marijuana.
- "Off Gridders."  These are more of your "Preppers."  Some may be the types that just want to get away from people and the larger society, and some are more "doomsday" oriented or a combination of both.  They wish to be self-sustainable and are heavily armed.  Most will not screw with you if you don't screw with them.  They also appreciate like-minded individuals and follow the rule of law.
- Criminals.  Those explicitly moving to the area or operating within the area with criminal intent.  They can be new arrivals or long term people.  Drugs are a real problem, which turns into the heavy property and violent crime.
- Everyday people.  There are many older and longtime families with a generational upbringing in the area.  There are good people and not so good people.  You have to feel for those who have to deal with the idiots on a regular basis.

Lava vents #13 and #14 reported today.  People caught in the evacuation area are being arrested.

The lave is a threat, but the poisonous gases are an even bigger one.

Probably old news for many of you, but was quite interesting for me.

Big Island: How Land Schemes Turned Lava Fields Into Subdivisions

Quote

Affordable housing in the fast-growing Puna area comes with a big risk — several communities have been wiped out by earlier lava flows.

In 1958, when Hawaii statehood was still a year away, two Colorado businessmen came up with a brilliant money-making scheme: Buy 12,000 acres of undeveloped, dirt-cheap land on the rocky, rainy slopes of the world’s most active volcano, divide it into 4,000 3-acre lots, and sell them for $500 to $1,000 apiece, paid off at $150 down and $8 a month.
