My hanai brother lives down in Ocean View. Quite a ways away from Kilauea. Besides frayed nerves from the sharp earthquakes his family is okay. A few other friends in Kona are fine. My friends in Hilo are fine. But I cannot get a hold of my friend in Hawaiian Acres. He is not close enough to the action to evacuate. He is not answering his home phone and cell phone. I am worried about what is going on with him and his family.  ???

Yeah he should be fine, it’s still rather far away from Leilani Estates. I’m currently not aware of any phone issues on this island since the eruption besides a whole bunch of power outages from yesterday’s earthquakes.

I was on island throughout the weekend.  Besides a large number of tremors, the two larger quakes on Friday were pretty amazing.  The 6.9 was the strongest I have ever felt in Hawaii and the duration was for a good period of time.  This was a good sized quake where you not only had the shaking, but also the heaving or rolling of the earth beneath you.  Never felt that before in Hawaii.

Pretty much the animals, both wild and domestic get quite, a real silence before the quake.  I was outside and watched trees rock, my home sway violently, shipping container "dancing" and some vehicles on our raised parking area near the edge looked like they might drop off.  We had to move vehicles away from the edges of the parking area just in case it got worse.  Once each quake stopped, we just went about our activities.  Big Islanders are pretty used to these events.

While it is terrible for many and we do get a lot of concerned family and friends looking for updates on our well being, the Puna District is pretty large and right now, the problem is pretty much isolated to the Leilani Estates area.  If you are not directly in the Leilani area, life looks like any other day on the Big Island.  There are also reports of water line issues in certain areas due to the quake activity.  People here take it in stride and for those born and raised here or those who have been here for a long time, it has been a part life.

Again not to minimize the damage as it is quite a bit with many homes lost, the lower Puna area has had a considerable influx of new residents in the last few years.  Despite the Pahoa lava flows for the past 3 or so years and with Pahoa almost being overrun which would completely cut everyone off, many people were buying land and homes down in that area for pennies on the dollar, because people were getting out and selling.  Now I wish no one harm, but there are a lot of people like the wahine on the news who had just purchased a place in Leilani, literally days before.  So there are people who clearly knew the potential problems.

Finally heard from him. The family was out helping his family and friends who were effected by this. He and his family were out all day and night and his cell phone battery died. When they got home they were so tired they didn't even realize there were panicked voicemail messages left for them by other family members. And he forgot to put his phone on the charger. Just glad they are alright.

I was in the Mountain View area all weekend.  My plans were to stay at KMC.  Got in Thursday afternoon and had a pretty nice cottage and later drove to one of the Kilauea viewing points only about a mile from the cottage.  It was PACKED!  Lots of tourists.  I got there pretty late, like maybe 8:15 pm or so.  It thinned out pretty quickly after that.  I told myself to go back again the next night when it was less crowded.

I was shooting all day Friday and didn't have my cell on me.  Finally checked my phone around 8 pm and had a bunch of calls.  Friends checking on me as well as a bunch from a few numbers I didn't recognize.  It was the KMC staff telling me that the park was shut down and I would have to come back and check out.  Then the later calls were more urgent.  Apparently, after the first couple of calls, the KMC reservation lady was starting to get really worried that I had gone hiking and gotten hurt or something else because of the earthquakes.  She was REALLY worried.  I ended up talking to her when I finally got back to KMC to get my stuff and she was genuinely worried about me.  Like many situations like that, not knowing is the worst and the human imagination tends to run wild.

I was supposed to have a Skype "check-in" call with the GF when I got back to KMC after shooting that day.  She had seen the news and like most "town folks" were worried about my staying in proximity of Kilauea.  She also wasn't too happy that I didn't have my phone on me.

Those quakes are pretty impressive!  As strong as some of the worst ones I've experienced on the mainland.

I'm watching the vids of the lava moving.  Seems like cars are lava magnets.
