A locally armed militia would have been vital if we had lost the battle at Midway and the Japanese invaded Hawaii.  The military would've given some hasty training to the militia and it would supplement the army.  It's questionable if the defense force could have held out against Japanese naval and air attacks.

Questions I have are...
American's have a rebellious and strong fighting spirit especially when faced with torture, starvation, and execution by the Japanese.  Would the immigrant and Hawaiian population have that same attitude to fight?
How many people owned firearms?

Stuff like isn't going to happen in America again.   If the American economy and military collapses and an invasion were to occur decades later, we'd be facing robots, drones, and get hit with stuff beyond visual range making firearms useless.

In the case of Hawaii, IF the Japanese forces had landed on Hawaii, I don't think the Hawaii populace would have lasted very long.  That's a big IF and includes a lot of the 50/50 things on the attack at Pearl Harbor going the other way.  That said, an interesting point (or theory) is that Yamamoto and others felt that attack on the Japanese mainland was folly.  That Japan didn't have the material or industry sufficient to sustain a campaign that far away from home.  That the steel embargoes had hit hard and that what started as a war for more control in Asia, leadership in Japan got ahead of themselves and wanted to hit the home run.  So Yamamoto's attack on Pearl was somewhat of a way of following orders while he believed very little success, or at least very little success after that IF that attacked had gone his way.

Another is that the Japanese forces never meant to reach the west coast.  That the war for them in the Pacific was intended to expand into the islands around Japan.  That the attack on Pearl was intended to be more of a distraction or maybe that that was as far as the Japanese forces meant to go, at least initially.

All stuff I read and I have no idea what is true, what is opinion, etc.  But the above scenarios made sense to me upon first reading into the history.  Like many things about WWII and wars in general, it all depends on whose account one reads.

While I too don't see an invasion of America like presented in Red Dawn, who knows.  It could happen after a weakening.  Like you mentioned in an economic collapse, or an EMP scenario like in One Second (or Year) After.

The arguments about whether or not Yamamoto actually said that or that quote (or sentiment) was just attributed to him goes on an on.  What I found interesting are the discussions related to that about whether or not an armed populace could have repelled the Japanese Army, or any conventional army, as well as the overall strategy of Japan in the Pacific.  What would have happened if the Japanese Army had landed in Hawaii, what if they made it to the west coast, etc.

I've always been interested in the history and who hated/fought who behind WWII, and WWI too.  I recently started watching the Band of Brothers series.  While different theater, I've also been interested in movies about the fighting in other theaters that aren't as well covered in the movies, like the North African and Middle East.

And now that the summit with NK is off (at least for now), I did a search on what small arms NK utilizes.  No idea how accurate this site is, but I thought it was interesting, and at least plausible.

Only recently watched BOB?  I got the collection when it first came out.  Stayed up till 4am watching it.  Good thing it was winter break and I didn't have class or work.  I did also watch The Pacific and though it was crap vs. BOB.  Till this day, I still watch BOB.

Although an invasion isn't as likely as an economic collapse or disaster, what we have learned is those with the guns control everything.  You have food and water.  Great, but even the most kind hearted person might rob you when SHTF.  I mean weeks/months in.  They wont harm you a few days in probably.  But when someone is starving, all politeness is off.  This doesn't include criminals who would rob you from day 1.  So protecting your supply is also just as important as having supplies.

I think I watched some BoB here and there before, but I didn't want to get into it mid-stream.  Then I kinda forgot about it.  Bought it last week for my dad and I was watching with him.

No argument on the latter part.  I think in a collapse of society, SHTF, whatever, the community will come together at first, supporting each other and stuff.  But as things go along, then all bets off.

I would start an army in my condo.  "Block war".

I used that reasoning to buy an AK, "if we get invaded, most likely they will have an AK so ammo can be found on the ground.".

Then the wife's response " Well if the ammo's on the ground, so will the AK.  So don't buy an AK".

I don't own an AK.

AK ammo is cheap.

per round, AK ammo is almost cheaper than the cost of components to reload 223/5.56.

AK ammo comes out cheaper once you factor in the amount of time spent on cleaning, brass prep, and reloading 223/5.56, and then you add the cost of equipment.

I have a friend
his wife told him to buy 2 generators
but won't let him buy guns
I have to resist telling her, "you have 2 generators, I have guns. guess who has 2 generators now?"

Someone did their homework.

John Milius, a heavy duty gun enthusiast and patriot.

Did the "Wild Bunch" as well.
