Couple of new things, FH has a pretty good thread with some Hawaii specific survival instructions/tips.  It's pretty much that Katrina guy's blog but summed up into about a page:
http://forumshawaii.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=614416

Also through that I found these forums, which have been great so far:

I usually visit http://www.survivalblog.com/index.html once a day.  That's where I got those Iniki quotes from.

Hurricane Preparedness week is next week.  Here's what's forecasted:

Quote
Two to three storms seen in Hawaii hurricane forecast

Advertiser Staff

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center's 2010 forecast calls for two to three tropical cyclones to form this year.
Quantcast

Jim Weyman, director of the hurricane center, said this morning that projected climate conditions point to a 70 percent chance of a below-normal season, a 25 percent chance of a normal season and a 5 percent chance of an above-normal season.

An average season in the Central Pacific has four to five tropical cyclones, which includes tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.

Still, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and prepared to act in the event a large storm reaches Hawaii.

"It is important to pay attention to forecasts and take each tropical system seriously," Weyman said. "Last year we had a scare when Hurricane Felicia approached, but fortunately it dissipated before hitting the Islands."

Hurricane season in the Pacific begins June 1 and runs through November.

Gov. Linda Lingle has proclaimed May 24-30 as Hurricane Preparedness Week.

When we had the tsunami, I took four 5-gallon buckets, filled them with clear water and 1/2 tsp bleach, per instructions from the bleach manufacturer's website.  And I forgot about them.  I mean, why not?  What's it gonna hurt?

Then a couple of weeks ago, it was time to brew beer again.  I needed to reclaim one of the buckets for the process.  Popped off the lid, and was astonished to see 3 or 4 colonies of radioactive-green algae in the bucket!  Popped the lids on the other buckets, same thing.  There wasn't much of it, the biggest colony being about the diameter of a coffee mug, most of them quarter-sized or smaller.  They were growing on the plastic, not free-floating.  The water still looked clear and smelled only of bleach.

So, WTF?  What nuclear-green algae crows in bleach water?
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Mike...I know you're joking, but how about we take this further out.

Let's assume that all the sheeple die after eating whatever is in their cupboards, including all the water.  No running water because DOW are sheeple.  No incoming cargo because no dock workers...sheeple too...which means no more rice/wheat/potatoes come in.  No farmers...you guessed it...sheeple.

You are going to need a way to filter a source of water.  You have to find a source of carbs...(breadfruit maybe?) and prepare it.  You're going to have to figure out how to preserve the meat that I'm assuming you will use the .308 on.

One thing I thought of just now... find a hot woman and save her from dying.  At least it will make the nights less cold. lol.

Aww thank's for playing mike but unfortunately with only 7 days worth of food and even less water that deep feeling is now a reality, your own...I won't leave you without a door prize though, and here it Is!! (drum roll please)... less guns, more food and water.

Sorry for squatting on your idea though.

No problem.

Hey just a reminder to all those would be hunters and gatherers...Oahu has a HUGE population that will STRIP THIS ISLAND CLEAN within days. I hunt regularly and i can tell you i see more and more hunters and less and less pigs!! so if you plan on surviving "off the land" , good luck to you...unless of course you will be hunting the two legged variety.....kangaroo anyone?...j/k., no seriously, buy food, save water, at least, AT LEAST, a months worth per person.

For water ... rainbarrels & biosandfilter. Ever measure how much comes off your roof? Bleach is tough, as are purification tablets, on the kidneys. It wouldve been better to brew 5 gal buckets of weak ale, like the sailors used to do when fresh water was scarce.

For food ... Were good for a couple months, with the occaissional chicken, mongoose, fish or pet in the stock pot. This island could feed a lot of people if they changed their diet.

ToG= love the Bug Out Babe

Yes, I did realize that and have two oh i guess, 12x12x30 inch boxes full of canned food now.  I also have two cases of thirty half liter bottles of water and we save the last case of bottles for refill if needed, so i would have 45 liter's if needed.  Also I am now looking at bargin's like guys found.  I am learning alot from listening so I will stop talking and learn more now, Tanks

Can't go wrong with cans, they last about 2-3 years(freshness wise, though I never tried), can be eaten cold, and usually contain 2-3 servings. The generic stuff from wal-mart is less expensive than most store sales and I figure I spend maybe $20 a month or so just buying a little extra here and there. It really does add up. Don't forget to include water for sanitary and hygiene purposes, even easier is baby wipes which can be had at costco for $20 per 1000 wipes. These are very handy for washing up quickly.

I know I said it before but I'll say it again, 72 hours of food and water does not apply to these islands!!! we are on our own, and i wouldn't expect us to be rescued by gov't efforts for at least 2 weeks. Look to Katrina for your example, it took our gov't weeks and weeks to get that place initially under control, and N.O. still has not fully recovered. Even during the tsunami scare, our state officials were unsure if they should shut down certain infrastructure or not, I guess when you have a bunker fully stocked in the side of a mountain its easy to have a 'wait and see' attitude. We(the people)  just have to remember that these islands are supplied by the mainland on a weekly basis, and it would take weeks to gather and ship the supplies needed to get us stabilized after a major disaster. Now, in the meantime, wouldn't it be great if we had at least a months worth of food and water stored for our family so we didn't have to venture out into the hordes of the unprepared.

If you're into reading, a good long term fictional SHTF book is "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen

It's basically about the effects on a national and local scale of an EMP attack on our country.

+1 me for prepper/survivalist. Though only budding. I had a vacation which was a hiccup for my preps, but now that I'm back I will have to continue.
Currently working on dry foods (rice, etc) and canned goods. I really need to get my water worked on though.

Agree with TOG that 72HRS supply wont cut it here. Being remotely located, one should prepare for a longer period. On canned food...It will last for 2-3 years, BUT the nutritional value of the contents of some canned food starts to dive exponentially after about a year. Yes, it may taste fine and fill you up, but it may be like eating flavored cardboard, you aren't getting much from it.  This timeframe is based on ideal conditions (the cooler the better) The garage is not the spot to store your canned foods. The same applies to MREs.

Rotation is key also.  Rotate your stock into your normal meals so that you replentish it with your normal grocery runs. First in/First out.

Remember that certain items like whole wheat, grains, and legumes will store for a very, very, long time if they are stored properly. Eating beans and rice for a lot of meals may suck, but not as much as watching your loved ones starve to death. Recommend a pressure cooker for preparing these items as it saves time and more importantly your heat source. This is really important since power/gas will be in limited supply.  For example. Brown rice ~45 minutes in a regular pot. Pressure cooker -15 minutes.

^ Good points vooduchikn.  I write on all my canned goods with a sharpie the date I purchased them to make it easier to know which canned goods are newer and which ones are older.
