"Police officers are civilians with guns"

I was waiting for someone else to start a topic about this story but no one did. Apparently there were various teams of police and security guards present during the bumpfire Vegas shooting but they just hid and didn't do anything.

"Police officers are civilians with guns. The notion that they can spring into action and take on a mass murderer who is running up the body count is probably something you can't ask."

They are not civilians.
Funny that you say that.
I'm just USAF Vietnam era trained.
I know how to shoot and kill things as
I'm ordered to do so.  I'm not a cop, I was
a soldier.
Cops are civilians exercising power
independent of  a central command.
The cops have a difficult job.
But one bad apple spoils the entire
bushel, and Hawaii has a lot of bad
apples.

Cops are not civilians,  as they are not confined to the restrictions of numerous laws; i.e. cops could legally sleep with prostitutes (until recently),  are not subject to firearm magazine restrictions, etc.

Everyone's job is hard, and being a cop is no different. There are numerous occupations that put their employees at risk on a far more consistent basis than police officers,  yet they are still denied privileges afforded to police officers. Why? Because police officers are not simply citizens with guns, but rather officials empowered by the city/county and state governments to enforce their laws.

In the past cops were defined as civilians until recently when the cops were excluded from the term civilians...and firefighters too for some reason.  Cops should be civilians as they obey and enforce civil laws for civilians.  They also live with and are civilians.

In the end it's just a word.  Don't fret over it.

Gangs also call non-gang-members "civilians", and members "soldiers".

Learned that from movies, so you know it's true.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

I would say humans with guns. No training will duplicate being in a gun fight. So no way of knowing how an individual human will respond. Training reduces the chance of freezing, but not 100%.
