KHSC Improvments
« on: July 31, 2018, 09:44:22 AM »
I was looking back to see if there was any movement or is the effort to improve KHSC is a dead issue!    Lately, there seems to be an increase in new shooters and more club activity.  Maybe there might be a few in the new crowd who may help or am I just fooling myself.   Seems like the place could use it.

There are LOTS of folks that are willing to help with range improvements.  However, since the facility is run by the City, all improvements need to go through them.  Not sure about the silhouette range and other portions run by clubs.  Years back, the roof blew off a portion of the rifle range.  A bunch of folks were willing to donate materials, labor, etc.  Was a no go and reason given IIRC was liability, but really heard it came down to union labor stuff.

A while back I believe Zips or someone was leading a range improvement petition, drive, whatever.  I vaguely recall some one from the City being interviewed about it, but can't remember what happened.  The City did help with providing equipment to clear some of the grassy areas ahead of the SSF, but the initial response was woefully inadequate.  A few guys showed up with weed whackers.  Need much more than that to clear most of those grassy areas.

the problem is not enough help

I had it organized to do it for free, and the city backed out on me (nice way of saying they screwed me over)

there were teams organized, and food donations, media people, etc

Yeah! Realize it’s a real hurdle to get people to vol, help, and actually do what they say.  Human nature tendencies for sure!

Well it’s an election year and 2a is sort of a hot topic and with the increased new gun owners with some cautious optimism this might be a good time to reignite the fire.  While the effort has always fizzled after a few months, the awareness or subject  should always be in our conversations!  If at the very least there still is conversations and as rhetorical as they maybe at least people are still talking about it!   It’s just taking a page out of the Democrap and RINO playbook!   Maybe one of these days the rhetorical conversation may bear fruit!  Rather to be hopeful than hopeless.

Are you referring to volunteers to would put in the work for improvements?

Or for politicians and folks at the City living up to their word?

I've found that it would be pretty easy to get folks lined up to perform the improvements.  I was there one morning when folks were doing some improvements here and there.  I jumped into help, but then only to be stopped when the first RO arrived.

But yeah, an effort or drive that we should always be pushing for.  Just many of us have been burned and become discouraged through being shut down in the past.

Truly understand the obstacles and getting burned!  Try appealing your property tax assessments - the process is just a joke for sure, and the city can claim their fair! F-THAT!  Those review boards made up with so called business leaders are just a political smoke screen so the politicians, city department head  can claim ignorance!

In my experience with these bonehead elected officials you want something really accomplished you need $$$ and a good lobbiest!

Trying to do this stuff grass roots just results in the same year after year disappointing results followed by discouragement of those who have tried!  I’ve been there trying to work with the city council and members of our state legislature on another matter and I have just One WORD describing them!  USELESS!

remember a year or two ago when mayor Caldwell announced the private-public partnerships to rehabilitate the parks?
THE VERY NEXT DAY, we applied for THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW to adopt KHSC
and were ignored for the third year in a row
we've even had support letters from HRA, and it did no good

The City turning away free labor? Liability issues or political?

They can't ask for more funding to fix the parks if they are getting free labor.  They would be risking LOSING funding if the free labor saves them money already budgeted for repair work. Volunteers could cost that department jobs.

They'll tell you it's liability or unions, etc.  It comes down to the city admitting they are incompetent while they are fighting for more tax revenue and higher salaries.

Suspended for now and a learning lesson for me.  Found out you can't expect people to just sign a petition on their own.  It requires a good and dedicated team going out to make it happen.  It's a long term goal for the coalition and I'll get back to it in a couple years.

I bring my own TP and Clorox wipes when ever going.  And Mrs.Change usually leaves soap from Bath and Bodyworks in both restrooms.

WOW!  Please thank that person for me!  I’ve seen the Irish spring soap bar too and it’s much appreciated.

If the rifle lane trenches get any deeper, the city will have to install guard rails to keep people from falling in.

Everybody - thank you for your comments, thoughts, ideas, and participation!  Hopefully someday your great efforts will payoff - I’m  still trying to figure out how a previous mayor pulled the wool over so many eyes and now we’re stuck with a rail system with an appetite for billions of dollars when a few million can do wonders for khsc which is (proven) gets good use week after week!
