My competition 2018
« on: August 21, 2018, 06:38:34 PM »
Training up for my competition next month in New Mexico.  This emphasizes accuracy over speed.  This one's difficult for me since it requires a lot of revolver and left handed shooting which I havent done much.  Kind of a last minute thing as Ive just started training for the past month.  I would like to be in the middle of the pack in the novice category.

Ive been practicing with my Glock 22 and SW686 revolver at HFR after work 2 or 3 times per week since Ive been really busy.  It only goes out to 15yds instead of the 25 or 50yds I need but it'll do.

This'll be interesting.

I got the Sig Sauer P320RX today and tried it out.  I was going to look at other suggested guns like CZ and Walther but been really busy nowadays so just got this from awesome Dwayne at Danger Close Tactical.  This will be my primary gun since it feels more accurate and is 9mm. I'll use the Glock 22 for a couple matches.

Another reason for the P320RX is I wanted to try using a red dot scope later and it came with one.  Competition is irons only so Ill take it off for now.  The gun feels really good in my hand and its not as slippery as my Glock Gen2.  Trigger is a step above with a crisper break.

My first shots felt really awkward.  The recoil felt very sloppy, like a wet noodle, compared to the crisp, abrupy, recoil on the Glock.  Guess its the high bore axis.  Got used to it after a hundred rounds.  My rapid fire strings up so gotta work on that.

Slow fire is pretty accurate and should improve as I get used to the gun.  Left handed consistanty groups a bit to the right.

I got the Safariland holster for it with sls/als.  Going to use it for open carry when we win the suit.

Another training day after work.  Fired about 150 rounds of 9mm and 50 rounds of 38spl.

1st shots of the day.   First few shots went wide to the left and a common thing I do.

Groups are improving and I have to drift my sights a bit to the right.  My goal is to get most of the shots in the X at 15 yards.  Practiced in the prone and sitting positions and I have an occasion flyer that I have to get under control.  Left hand is improving and are centered now, just gotta work on tightening up the groups.  Rapid fire is pretty good, but I have to get it down to 1.25 seconds per shot.

My SW686 revolver setup.  Got a good deal on the holster on ebay.

1st shots with the revolver.  Groups are improving though I think I'm flinching down.

Gotta work on my flinching.  Left hand is improving.

Just 2 1/2 weeks to go till the comp.  My ammo stash at HFR is down to 1,000 rounds of 9mm now which is enough for about 5 more afterwork practice sessions.  My work schedule is lightening up now so I'll be able to do some Koko Head sessions too.

First shots of the day.  Shooting a bit low and gotta control those 9 ring shots.

Worked on speed a little, shooting slightly faster overall.  Takes me about 20 practice shots before I can get everything in the 10 ring at 15 yards.  I find my grip is looser in the beginning then I firm up as I go.  I timed my rapid fire shots which are 2 mags of 6 rnds in 20 sec at 15 yards.  Groups are improving, I just have to get a tight group on the first try and I think I have a loose grip again in the beginning.  I got the timing down right for it.  Still working on my shooting positions and have to prevent those flyers.  Left hand is improving and everything is centered on the target, just have to tighten the groups more.

Ran out of time at the range so just got off a quick 36 shots with the revolver.  Revolver groups are getting a little better.  I'm practicing staging the double action trigger before firing which speeds things up and makes for a more accurate shot.   I'm keeping everything pretty centered now.  Got a couple major flinches with my left hand but better overall.

Since your RX is brand new, will it shoot better as you put more rounds through her?

Might go HFR on Monday.  Plan was to go KHSC for the silly side, but they're closed.  So prob go KHSC on Sunday instead.  Got a few free passes for HFR.

Probably very little if any improvement and I put about 500 rounds through it in the past week so it's already worn in.  No jams and it's working good.  It's more getting used to the grip, trigger, and high bore axis.  Compared to my Gen 2 Glock, the grip fits my hand better and has more texturing than the blocky slippery Glock grip.  Trigger is similar, but the Sig has a sharper break to it.  I got used to the high bore axis which at the beginning made the gun seem sloppier on recoil.  I'm still getting used to the tall suppressor height sights.  The tall sights combined with the high bore axis makes sighting in a bit unusual to the low bore axis Glock.

I got a membership there and can bring a guest in for free.  I work on Monday and I usually go there after work when I can during the week.

Ouch!

I had a .22 lr brass get stuck inside my eye pro, right near where yours apparently did. Got a pretty good blister. I was able to apply ice right away and that limited the severity of the burn.

Yesterday afternoon I put in my ammo order with MidwayUSA.  This is the first time I bought ammo online (except for the CMP).  It's not the cheapest place for ammo but they've been reliable on my past orders and I really need the ammo delivered to NM in time for the competition or else I'm screwed.  I place the order an hour before they closed, and they shipped it early this morning.  That is really fast service.

I got a dilemma with my revolver shooting.  First is the shotgun pattern on the target rapid firing at 25 yards, but it shouldn't be too bad since I'll be doing it at 15 yards at the comp, so I should get most of the shots in the 9 ring for the competition.  However it takes me 24 seconds to shoot 12 rounds with a reload when I have to do it in 20.  Looks like I'll be shooting a lot of 38spl in the next 2 weeks.

It's for a side rifle match, 50 rounds + zero/practice ammo.

Hey Zippz
Not sure if  Moon Clips are allowed in place of speed loaders, but if they are, they may shave off of your reload time.
Good Luck !
