- a Non-participant, holing up in a "safe space" to avoid the mayhem? (Neutral)

- Some other "mode"?

Once you choose a mode, how would you prioritize your preparations before November?

Would you seek safety in large numbers?  Try to gather people with specific skills, like military, medical, construction?

I imagine the cruise line business would get lots of takers if they scheduled a trip leaving Oahu (or any US state) that afternoon.

I heard about this movie, but couldn't find myself watching it because the reactions of the non-criminals are dumb.  if someone came into my home uninvited during the purge and there are no laws and no consequences, then I would blast away and even forget about gun safety rule (know what's beyond your target).  Actually, I probably would be setting off pop shots all night just for fun.  Gotta make sure you got lots of ammo.

Or if I'm uber rich, hire contractors to protect me and my family.  You have all year to prepare right?  Or are guns illegal for normal citizens also?  So only bad guys have guns, as in the 2nd amendment is gone.

There's a limited series being aired on USA starting September 4th.  It looks to be more detailed, showing the variety of ways people deal with purge night than the movies did.

Forgot to mention, this is the same reason why I couldn't start watching The Walking Dead.  First episode when the guy went into the tank.  The other guys were on the roof and the racist white guy was giving the black guy a hard time.  Black guy had gun.  No laws due to outbreak.  If I were the black guy, I would have shot the WS guy.

If you think the most unrealistic part of TWD was a Black guy didn't get gangster on a racist redneck, and not all the zombies everywhere trying to eat the living, I'd say your "fantasy filter" need tuning.

I only saw the movie fairly recently also when it was on cable TV (someone else's subscription). Forced digital is good for some things (better quality and a few more channels, might not have seen it otherwise) although overall I would revert back to analog if I could.

I think the same as you, I would kill any intruder mercilessly and even use the opportunity to study the most effective and minimum damage required to kill, if possible. Not torture on purpose, and I'd hope for the quickest and most deadly kill to succeed, but if I happened to find myself in a situation where I stood to learn something I would use the opportunity to slice them up and learn what I could so I can kill more effectively next time.

I might be reluctant to shoot up my own house though because I'll break my stuff. I'll only fight if I have to. The last time I had a home invasion (described elsewhere here) I had actually and probably foolishly prioritized my stuff over my own safety in various ways (I did not describe our exact encounters in full detail).

I would not be an active participant as there is no one near me that I want to kill at this time, however if there was, I would consider it. I might also think about looting a company that pissed me off, but there likewise aren't any local ones that fit that category. Except maybe the cable companies but I don't think you can loot much from them.

I've given this some thought since seeing the first movie a couple of years ago, and the ads for the upcoming TV series made me rethink some things.

I'd gather up a few family members & friends and charter a medium size boat with higher-than-normal speed.  I'd take enough arms & ammo to defend against any "Purge Pirates" we may encounter.

Another idea for quick prepping was buying a shipping container and keeping it at the dock.  Unless someone knows we're there, it would be tough to find our container among hundreds.  The container would be fire resistant, difficult to breach, and a few hidden gun ports would keep potential attackers at bay.

I'd likely reinforce the walls with steel plates, since the container may not be very bullet-proof.  I'd also need to add an emergency exit of some kind -- maybe a tunnel -- just in case it's breached or the doors get locked with us inside.

Lots of other ideas, but those have the highest probability of survival.  Basically, I'd be neutral.  While it's tempting to take advantage of such an opportunity, I'd be more concerned with my family's safety.

Get some "like minded" (i.e. gun enthusiasts and at least somewhat aware of prepping) friends and head to the nearest Costco or Sams.  Preferrably a location with masonry or concrete exterior walls.  And should have plenty of popcorn there. . .

Sam's or Costco offers a huge supply of anything you need, but you'd need a LOT of friends to defend a space that big.  Front doors, delivery bays, emergency exits, ceilings .... Lots of areas to eyeball.

In the same vein as a cargo container, maybe a rental storage unit would be a good choice?  Already has standard security features, and no one would notice you stockpiling gear and supplies.

I think Costco would be over kill, isn't the purge only 24 hours?  So no need scavenge either.  Best bet would be to make a guillie suit and lay down in the bush for 24 hours.  Or better yet, buy lots of ammo and just randomly shoot our your window and doors.  Pretty sure criminals won't attempt to fight and would rather have a softer target.  Suppressing fire.
