They were discussing this on the financial news this morning. Old school thinking is exactly what you said. Brand suicide. The new school is saying that the target market for their products are getting younger. And they are the repeat customers and that while they may take a hit now, it will benefit them in the long run. Old school then asks, why alienate older customers for any reason?

I am on the old school side. I think they could have found someone else who is apolitical and continue their successful ways. A company should never alienate any segment of customers no matter how small. In the long term I would guess they will come out of this okay. But in the short term, who knows? If I owned Nike stock I would sell it.

Nike stock is down around 3% as I typed this. I guess we’ll see how things go.

I think Nike was stupid for doing that. However, I think they feel the hurt, but I agree with Inspector that their intended market is the younger generation that either eat that stuff up and are inspired by it or are otherwise unaware. I also think that Nike being such a global brand that they get through all of this just fine. They are back in the news again for sure.

I like Nike’s athletic clothing, but lately I’ve come to like Under Armour just as much if not more.

I need a new pair of shoes...crossing nike off the choices list now.

I look at it this way, Kap has been on their list of sponsored athletes for years now, but to be the face of Nike is something else.  He is not a great athlete, which Nike's face athletes are known to be.  At best, he is a slightly below average QB who is out of a job.

I do believe that Nike will end up being ok, but for now, they will be losing lots of money.  So why risk losing millions now?  Unless they did a study and found that their black demographic has fallen.  This would be the only reason why I can see Nike doing this.

Let's not forget that Kap donated money to a fund that was created for a guy who killed a cop.  Wore cop/pig socks.  Very close relationship with Linda Souer. Unemployed and because of his gf, lost a job.  So all the factors put together, Nike made a bad decision. 

I was ok with Nike prior to this, but preferred Under Armor.  Now I will definitely not buy Nike.  The Mrs. likes Nike, so I'm going to work on her switching to UA.

Very possible. I am sure they thought this over and made a calculated decision. Only time will tell.

Hmm... just canceled an order for Nike shoes.   Time to go shopping again.   Any suggestions on good tennis shoe companies?

Back in the day I did play a lot of tennis. My favorite shoes were adidas and asics.
They seem to have better arch support.

I like New Balance myself. Not quite as stylish as most others but I really don’t care about style these days. They last a good long time for me.

I used buy almost all Nike until maybe 3-4 years ago. Then i started getting ASICS mixed in.  Nike was producing stuff I didn’t care for and what I did like seemed to break down faster than before. The ASICS seems to last quite a lot longer and slept for me well and are comfortable. So haven’t went back to Nike for a while.

I'm Chinese so asics is ok with me

I've always wore NB because they're way cheaper than Nike's.  This is for daily shoes.  My gym shoes used to be Nike,but the cost $120+.  So I switched to Kelme (indoor soccer shoes) and it cost me $60.

I did wear Nike shirts and shorts, but have switched to UA years ago.  But for polo shirts I still buy them, but not anymore.  I'll stick to my UA polo's.

Please ... show me where that "sacrifice everything" slogan applies to him.  He has been paid by Nike since 2011, even for the 2 years he was without a team and not used in any Nike ads.
