Cordless tools!
« on: September 24, 2018, 01:38:02 PM »
I needed a new cordless drill.
Got a BD (black and Decker) lithium ion 20 volt drill.

Then I got tired of my neighbor letting her weeds grow wild.
So I used to haul out the extension cord and cut her weed patch.
BD makes a 20volt weed wacker so I got that and it's perfect for medium size jobs.

Then I got tired of sweeping up leaves and grass that my yard guys blow all over the place.
So I got a 20volt blower and that works great for keeping the yard tidy.

Finally, I got a 20volt reciprocating saw for the bamboo and Haole koa.
I'm in love with that saw now.

So this is a shout out for BD 20volt tools. They are great for maintaining a medium size property.
All this stuff cost less than 200 bucks from Amazon.

Amazon let the order got through and the shipped the tools and the batteries? Did something change I thought they didn't ship lithium batteries to Hawaii.

I've also received garden tools with the included battery from Amazon.

The battery rules say they can ship it with the associated device if it's either (1) installed in the item, or (2) packaged so the contacts of the battery can't come into contact with metal, such as in the battery retail package.

So far, I haven't been able to order an extra/replacement battery.

Yeah Amazon shipped tools with battery OK!
So after I got 3 tools with battery. I got the saw without battery because I already had 3 batteries plus 3 chargers.
Battery life is surprisingly good. I cut 2 piles of bamboo and haole koa and still had power to do more.

Funny thing though, I tried to order a red dot sight and the vendor would not ship it with that tiny battery.

The problem I've found is most venders don't really understand the rules, and instead of listening to the customers explain it, they default to the super-safe "I better not even make this sale" position.

Sometimes you can get one to listen if you call and explain the rules and how it's okay to ship batteries the right way.  Good luck finding that guy/gal.

The Greenworks 40v tools look pretty good as well and come out of the same factory as Kobalt so you can swap batteries once you grind off the tab. Sometimes the grey market batteries are even better than the factory ones, but I know for instance the M18 Milwaukee stuff has some kind of proprietary chip that keeps them from working. Anyway it's cool to see battery outdoor gear that actually works for a change.

Over the years I collected a hodge podge of lithium battery tools. I promised to limit myself to just one or two brands. yeah sure.  I now have tools made by ryobi, makita, craftsman, dewalt, porter cable.... each brand has tools or features that the others do not have. People have gifted me some of these tools since I am a notorious tool junky. Just like OF I hate to drag out the extension cord unless there is no other choice. I love the cordless sawzall. Dragging an extension cord into the crawl space sucks. One of my fav tools is a makita 36v (18vx2) rotary hammer drill. It will drill concrete like a hot knife thru butter. It will even drill thru blue rock. These tools are not unlike aks and ars, there is no end to them.

Check out ebay for lithium batteries. Some sellers will ship to HI with no problems. Be cautious of the brand x stuff. The deals can be very tempting. I had an off brand 4.0ah battery pack fall apart on the first use. I got a full refund but what a let down.

Re, brand  x batteries....
I bought generic replacement batteries for my old cordless drill driver and they started to swell up and got stuck in the drill.

I used to be a fan of Porter Cable power tools.  I had a bunch of them.  That was about 15 years ago now when I bought my first house.  They were excellent power tools, but the batteries didn't seem to last very long and the replacements were pretty expensive and I believe newer models weren't backward compatible.  So I eventually got rid of them.  The power tools available today seem much lighter, especially the battery packs, as well as cheaper.

Growing up, when I worked in a family business, it was all Makita.  Those seemed really good.  I haven't found the need for power tools as much these days since I live in a condo.  If I ever moved into a house again, I would likely do research into what's good at the time.  DeWalt, Ryobi, Makita, Porter Cable, etc all seem like good quality.  I typically end up going for whatever seems like the best for the money.

Lately, the only battery tool that I considered was a battery powered fan.  That was mostly in case the power went out for an extended period of time and I wanted to keep things cooler in the evenings.   ;D

Electric tools make it easier but there is something satisfying about a nice sharp hand tool cutting a branch.

Damn those black n decker tools are cheap and look just like the dewalt line. I wonder how they perform side by side considering theyre 1/4th the price. Id hope probably at least half as good.
I know theyre both under the same corporation but havent seem them before. The recip saw looks just like mine but orange and with a smaller foregrip and motor.
The brushless dewalt was 159.

You should pick up some versatile attachments for your recip saw. I do less cutting and more work with the attachments. There are nylon and stainless scrub brushes, carbide grout rasps, and metal scrapers.
