Getting a rifle from HPD?

Is it possible to get a firearm that was confiscated from my dad  back from HPD?
It's been about 20+ years, my father pass away and he claimed he bought that rifle for me. If I remember correctly it was taken away when he and a friend were shooting milk jugs off the back of the boat. I've thought about this off and on for a while, but never knew where to start?

Thanks for the reply. With some luck I'll be down there soon. I don't know how I could go about getting the report as it was over 20 years ago. Im kinda doubtful, but it would be nice to have that gun back.

It's possible, but there are a lot of "if's". You'll need to find out the details such as: disposition of the case (if any) and get all documentation.

If charges were filed, you'll need the report#,  case# and court documents (if it went to court). Get all of that, a death certificate, and try to reclaim the rifle.

If he wasn't charged and there's no police report? Then you might be out of luck...think Maui PD June 2011, where a cop kept a surrendered gun.

Another thing to consider is the 20+ years...it might have been archived or disposed of by now.

It's worth a try. I'd go to the PD, ask if it's still there and what you need to do to recover it.

Thanks. Well I took a trip down today and talked with them. I'm very surprised everyone I talked to was super friendly and helpful. Because its an old case they are trying to find the report(s) and said they will contact me in a few days. They were able to pull up all the sn#s for firearms that my father registered, so evidence is looking to see if they have any of them in there. I'll let you guys know if I am able to get it or any of them back.

When I first read this I figured yeah good luck with that 20+ years they probably either got rid of it or it's rusted so bad it's beyond use. Regardless, I hope you get everything back though.
