New TV Recommendations
« on: October 22, 2018, 08:31:03 AM »
Looking to buy a new TV soon.  My current one is 11 years old (I'm surprised it lasted this long) and one of the speakers is blown.  I was looking to get it fixed, but seems like with the labor and parts, it comes out to 1/3 to 1/2 of what it would take to get a new TV.

It's been a while since I shopped for TVs, but seems like Samsung and TCL (newish brand) seem to get really good reviews.  My current TV was pretty close to top of the line, at least when I got it in 2007, but I'm just looking for something pretty good and don't need the newest and best out there right now.  I'm happy with the 1080 of my current TV, but I've also seen what the newer TVs are capable of, and that's still in the $400-700 range.

Any recommendations on "excellent quality for the money" type of TVs would be appreciated.  Right now, I'm thinking of something from either Costco or Sams in the $400-600 range.  Would be willing to go to around $1000 if I feel it's worth it.  But with the prices of TVs these days and pace of technology, I'd probably go with something "good enough" and look to upgrade in maybe 5-7 years.

Cheaper to get a new TV, because when you fix 1 part, another will break and now you're over the cost of a new one. Go to Costco, they got a good return policy.  And TV's are super cheap now. For $500 you can get a 50 inch flat screen.  Compared to 10 years ago, for the same TV would have cost $2,000+.

I posted a while ago that I had the money for a 1911, but all within a few months, I had to buy a new TV, pay the deductible on my car insurance, vehicle registration, lost a lot of money in Vegas.  But others posted they're hit hard by medical cost.  So I guess I shouldn't complain.

This TV was close to top of the line in 2007.  I think I paid over $3k for it, but I was more into home theater stuff then.  Not anymore.  After finding out that this TV would need about $200-300 to fix and that new TVs that I was looking at in the $500-550 range, it was an easy decision to get a new one.  Giving my old TV to a friend's kid, who will mainly use it for gaming.  It will be an upgrade from his 32" TV.  I remember when it was nice to have a 32" tube TV in college.

Yeah, medical expenses can hurt.  My surgery was about $20k, but insurance covered all but $24, but the scans and stuff prior to the surgery was expensive.  Even after insurance, I've paid close to $500 so far.  That's easily a new handgun.   :(

Can't really complain though as I know more than a few on the board have faced much steeper medical bills.

Check out BestBuy.  They have price matching, so if you find it cheaper, they'll pay you the difference back.  Unfortunately Costco is usually excluded, which is not a big deal anyway. Costco usually sells exclusive models the other retailers don't, so it's impossible to do a price match model-to-model anyway.

Costco has a really great return/warranty policy for electronics.  They also get models that incorporate features from higher end models for less cost than the higher ones.

You should look at the pictures to be sure what you like.  The 4K pixels for a screen size over 40" is a good feature.  I have a Samsung 42" 4K that is outstanding. It also tunes in Over-the-Air digital channels easier than my older Sony's.  The smart features are also very good, but I use an Amazon FireTV stick now, so the on-TV apps get little use here.

The sound quality in my Samsung is better than the Sony's I have, but I normally use those with my home theater speakers.

If everything on your old TV is still to your liking, you might consider a sound bar or other external sound system.  You'll get better sound than before, and when you find a good deal on a TV upgrade, you can still connect the better sound system to it.  External sound should be less expensive than a new TV depending on what you buy.

My best advice is to check the Black Friday ads coming soon.  October is almost over.

I bought that TV on sale at BestBuy.  Looks like the current online offering that's closest to mine is this one for $399 on sale:

If its just your speaker that is broken then you can get a soundbar for as little as 60-100.
Two things to keep in mind; new 4k tvs upscale the picture of cable tv or dvds to look even better than they are. Even non 4k content will look better. Sound on new thin flat panels is awful, be warned. Thin, tiny, rear facing speakers cant be expected to do much.

If you replace the tv i highly recommend tcl.
Love the roku interface and simple remote.
55" 4k is regularly under 400 at costco, extended 5 year warranty included. I have a samsung mu8500 in the living room which is one of the higher end non oled tv's and i see little difference and its twice the price of a 65" tcl. At the time tcl just came out so i got the mu8500 because i didnt want to spend even more for the only tv's that were better, the sony x900 or lg oled.

I like the base model tcl so much i also tried their upgraded p series with voice control,120hz,and full array backlit led instead of edge lit. Its directly comparable in picture to my samsung. Those arent regularly carried at costco but best buy has them for 650 regular price and they go on sale for 50-100 off. Costco had them for 2 months last year but with no voice control. They stock different variations of tv's that best buy stocks so people cant price match. My samsung is called the mu850 instead of mu8500 as its known in all other retail stores.

Thanks.  Yeah, I was looking at BestBuy too.  Sams does (or did) have an offer for savings if you bought a Samsung TV with a soundbar, so just another point to compare.

My current TV is a Sony Bravia 46" and the picture is ok.  However, I've seen some newer TVs at friends' houses that in my price range look way better.  I mean 1080s is still great, but some of the newer stuff is noticiably better.  I was planning on getting a sound bar anyway and actually recently disconnected all my old receiver and other components.  Just life got in the way.

Thank you for the feedback.  As mentioned above, I was looking at getting a soundbar before the TV speakers blew.  I am not into home theater stuff as much as I used to be, but would be nice to have more than the basic speakers of the TV.

Before this week, I had not heard about TCL, but in my research, they got very good ratings.  They and Samsung seem pretty high up there in ratings and about the same price.  55" is what I've been looking at.  I'm at 46" now, which is fine.  I think 55" would be good for my living room.  Since my living room isn't that wide, anything larger would be getting too big.

I haven't ruled out OLED, but I'm thinking not and mostly for the price.  I'm thinking of staying in the $500-600 range.  From what I've researched so far (not that much), that gets me in the range of Samsung NU7100 series (4k UHD with HDR) and TCL 4-6 Series ($380 - $450)..

I've read analyses on what size TV is best.  Most agree it's a function of distance from the screen and whether you subscribe to the 30º or 40º viewing angle as best case.

That puts you in the range of 60" to 70" diagonal screen size at a distance of about 9 feet away.

I'm still using a 50" Sony in my living room I bought the year Circuit City closed in Pearl City.  I'm sitting about 15' away.  I keep wishing this TV would die.  So far, I've replaced the control circuit board for about $100, and it's still working fine.  :wtf:

Ended up with a Samsung 65” 7 series UHD tv and soundbar. The picture is noticeably better, even with cable HD signal. Tried with an HD DVR program and that WAY clearer than my old tv.

The sound on this tv is ok. The sound bar really helped.

Ended up with Samsung due to the deal with the sound bar. That and they didn’t have the 65” TCL in stock. I was able to compare the Samsung and TCL at Best Buy and the TCL seemed like an awesome value.

I keep things simple.  The only TV  I have a 26 inch Samsung in the kitchen.  No TV in the living room.
No one comes to my house to watch football.
