So they've been sending a questioner to all the candidates for gov.  The question's were from members of the groups page.  And they were sent to all candidates.  This is why SSH is making an exception to allow this political piece.

Tupola just sumbitted her answers and of all the candidates, hers seems the most complete.  Not as vague as Ige or others.

Recap:
1) She will support the Young ruling
2) She will support tasers
3) She wants a stronger castle law (civil liability immunity)

Where's Ige's response? The link given (https://www.facebook.com/…/sshot/permalink/2244777779093234/) doesn't work for me.

I'm curious because Tupola's response, below, sounds pretty much like it could have been written by Ige. Vague and wishy washy. Plus, she's never once responded to my email requests to clarify specifically her positions on a variety of Second Amendment issues, including bearing arms. Never Once.

What  are  your  views  on  concealed  and  open  carry? 

I  strongly  uphold  the  Second  Amendment  and  responsible  gun  ownership.  Our  state  has  some  of  the  strictest  gun  laws  and  is  a  “may  issue”  open  carry  state.  The  9th  U.S.  Circuit  Court  of  Appeals  ruled  2-1  that  Hawaii  officials  had  violated  George  Young’s  rights  when  he  was  denied  a  permit  to  openly  carry  a  loaded  gun  in  public  to  protect  himself.  As  Governor,  I  will  uphold  the  second  amendment  and  the  9th  circuit  court’s  ruling.

She has never done anything in the legislature, even once to my knowledge (and I've asked her to multiple times), to support any of the bills that have been introduced to begin to restore our rights (eliminate the 10-round mag limit for handguns, create "shall issue" carry, legalize stun guns and suppressors, etc.). Notice how she makes the Ninth Circuit ruling be specifically about George Young? Makes me wonder if she's weasel-wording the fact that she'd only support George Young getting a license (it's not a "permit"). These politicians say the exact words they do for a reason, especially with written answers. Since she voted with the Dems 90% of the time, I don't really trust her. Better for us than Ige? Likely, but still... rather have a libertarian oriented person as far as our rights go, not a RINO.

To me she's the only politician in Hawaii who said she will support the ruling.  So that's a start, compared to everyone else's answer.  And the others probably don't even know about the Young ruling either.  So the fact that she knew about it means something also.

I have emailed her on her stance on CCW and she supports it because she feels that we should have the right to defend ourselves.  Has she ever presented a bill for it?  The answer is no, so if you're looking for actions vs. answers then that's something to consider.

But I do give her credit at her answers.  And you have to look at her as the lesser of 2 evils if she is a RINO.

SSH is bumping all the candidates answers.  Since they all came in at different times.

Gun Issues:

Yes

No

d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
Yes

e) Other or expanded principles:
Background checks are required to get a permit to acquire a firearm in Hawaii.


While I don't like her answer about needing a license for gun ownership, compared to the other candidates, she seems the best pick (unless someone can point me in another direction).

That's pretty funny. She answers the first question about "gun control" in the negative and then answers every specific question about gun control in the positive. That's what "makes sense" to a politician... especially one that "supports the Second Amendment but, favors just a few commonsense gun safety regulations". I don't see any great difference readily available with the "independent" nor the "green" candidates... but it all really doesn't make any difference anyway... we all know Ige will be governor and Tupola has about as much realistic chance of winning as the green and independent do coming in second (poll 10 days ago: Ige up by 21%).

Favor or willing to lead the building of one?  2 different meanings.  If she favors one, then she won't try and stop it if it were to be built.

She favors the 2a, but submitted no pro 2a bills.  My dist rep submitted a CCW bill in 2017, but it got no where.  Same guy favored the bump stock bill.

I've already voted.
I wasted my time voting for the Pubbies as we have Democrats for
life here or in the case of Patsy Mink in life and death.
Our best best is the Supreme court of the US as the
Democrats here are all determined to disarm the population.
I'm still waiting on my open carry license request.  The 9th Circus still
has not agreed to review Young v Hawaii En Banc.  I don't think the 9th will
review En Banc. Given the makeup of the SCOTUS these days. They will get
overturned.
The question is how do we force the Top cops to comply
with the law?

I asked her, as the top Republican in the Hawaii legislature, the House minority leader, to please ask the committee chairpersons to hold hearings on the bills senator Gabbard had submitted for me (handgun mag limit to 17, make stun guns legal, "shall issue" CCW), and ask them why they weren't holding hearings. She never even wrote me back to say it wasn't important enough to her to even ask them to do it or for an explanation of why they hadn't and wouldn't. That about says it all. Yeah, on paper or out the side of her mouth she "supports the second amendment". Of course she does, so do Ige, Hirono, Schatz, Gabbard, et al.

Might as well look to the "independent" candidate Teruya. Here's how he answered that SSH question:

Absolutely  NOT  this  is  a  crime  magnet,  I  MAY  support  concealed  carry  with  training  and  certification  every  year,  must  go  thru  obstacle  shooting  course  and  must  qualify.    Violation  of  this  law  must  be  3  life  sentences  with  no  parole.  Like  I  said  discussion  on  rules  and  penalties  need  to  be  discussed.  I  am  NOT  IN  FAVOR  of  this...  BUT  am  willing  to  listen.    I  hope  everyone  is aware  that  if  you  possess  a  firearm  and if  you  get  in  a  situation  involving  a  law  enforcement  officer.  Your  chances  of  getting  seriously  shot  will  be  very  high.

In other words he DOESN'T support the second amendment, at least as far as "the right to bear arms shall not be infringed". But I'll bet a large pile of cash he will say he does, and with a straight face.

Bottom line: We have no choice of candidate to lead the state government that has the slightest real interest in returning the lawful exercise of our rights to us. And even if we did have one, they'd have the proverbial snowball's chance in hell of getting elected. Thus, SCOTUS remains our only hope (unless some day Trump gets to appoint enough judges to the Ninth to change the odds there).

So... I already voted... what's next?  :D

Until the cops are ordered by some higher authority you could show up with the Pacific Fleet and five SCOTUS justices and they won't give you squat.

And it's gonna be a long long long time until that happens.

Obstacle course to qualify.  If they tried to pass that, I'd like to see how ADA/ABA receives that one.

3 life sentences?  I guess we all have the luxury of multiple lives. . .

I mean I get what he's saying, but all of that speaks to irrational and emotional based "reasoning".

I'm going to stay positive and hope open/CCW will be legal during my life time.  But really more like for my kids.

Talked to a guy from IL.  He said they thought the same thing.  But about 6 years ago CCW was allowed.  Except Chiraq...

Yeah, except Illinois did NOT have a 92% vehemently anti-rights legislature, so when AG Madigan chose not to appeal Moore v Madigan the state legislature HAD to do something (because the court actually gave them a deadline), and the Illinois "gun rights" organization had been well organized for about a dozen years, both at the grassroots level and at the lobbying level. In other words, a completely different situation than Hawaii.

I guess we have to wait and see. Since I'm way toward the diminished end of the "time remaining" scale, I'm rather impatient. Of course if I were 12 and had the same personality, I'd be just as impatient.  :geekdanc:

If I get refused, I will be going to the police commission,
that is about all we can do in Hawaii county to start.
Unlike Oahu we don't have a lot of lawyers here.
I only know of one  lawyer for criminal stuff,
the rest do divorce,  real estate, contracts, and bankruptcies.
They don't do Federal laws which the county is violating, or
petition in Federal courts.
Hawaii state Democrats depend upon that to subjugate us.

I'm not going to be hopeful any more.  In 2020 I will start spending 1 out of every 3 months on the mainland and slowly increase my time there until I am living in either NV or AZ 9 months out of the year.  I will spend the 3 hottest months there in Hawaii.

She actually has tried to do a lot in the legislature. For one,  she went out of her way to introduce legislation for term limits and voter recall on my behalf, even though I'm not in het district, but this legislation was not allowed to leave committee,  as usual.

Kind of hard to get anything done when you are significantly outnumbered by democrats in the legislature.  She also has more important issues to worry about as a legislator, like those plaguing her community, and will likely have even more important things to worry about as governor.

I didn't say she didn't. All I said was that she hadn't done anything to support the bills re our rights that I asked her about, as far as I know, because she did not respond to my requests.

Those would be good improvements, along with initiative (though in the current environment (overwhelming majority of Dems) it could bite us).

Absolutely. And the same would be in effect if by some miraculous fluke (ain't gonna happen) she were elected governor.

She also has more important issues to worry about as a legislator, like those plaguing her community, and will likely have even more important things to worry about as governor.

It's not an "either or" situation. She could do all the stuff that's "more important" to her and still ask a committee chairman why they won't give a hearing to some bills. Nor does it explain her 90% record of voting with the Dems. Since her vote wasn't necessary to pass any of those bills, why, as Republican leader, did she vote so overwhelmingly consistently with the Dems? Is her "Republican philosophy" 90% in alignment with the "Democratic philosophy"? It's all "academic" at this point anyway, as she has zero chance to win this contest. But, the Republican party will have to decide their strategy in the future for selecting candidates: Are they going to continue to select RINOs or will they opt to choose people that more strongly represent "conservative" positions? Since it's clear their attempt to appease the overwhelmingly "progressive" voters of Hawaii by selecting a "Dem-LITE" doesn't work at all, how much would they have to lose by selecting a candidate further to the conservative side? I guess it doesn't really matter, as either, or any, will continue to lose for the foreseeable future. Or maybe in the near future Tupola will be another example of a Republican who "sees the light" and re-registers as a Democrat?
