Study finds 1 in 6 Americans have a favorable opinion of 'army rule' (Read 3583 times)

Heard this scary bit on the radio today. I find it hard to fathom how so many people here in America can think such a thing. Is 1 in 6 Americans that far gone? In 1995 it was 1 in 16.

The highest numbers were among millennials.
"political scientist Roberto Stefan Foa found approval particularly high among millennials, with only 19 percent saying it would be "illegitimate for the military to take over if the government were incompetent or failing to do its job," the Times reported. Forty-three percent of "older Americans" said it would not be legitimate for the military to do so."

This NY Times article has more in detail.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/29/world/americas/western-liberal-democracy.html?smprod=nytcore-iphone&smid=nytcore-iphone-share&_r=1

Surveys also showed a decline in how many people thought it was essential to have democracy.

This is not a definitive poll but is concerning nonetheless.

The reason why it's 1/6 now is because who the CIC is.  But they're too dumb to realize that for the military to take over (coup) would take lots of planning and steps.

I don't think liberals ever heard the oath all military members take.  And majority of the people I know in the military and their families support POTUS.  Way more than when Barry was POTUS.  These are people from here, and many other states.  You think Trump would have traded 5 high level Al Queda members for 1 sgt?  And not to mention all 5 are back at it again.  Barry got trade raped.

A smaller percentage of the population have military service experience today than in 1955.  US peacetime drafting went on from 1940 until 1973.

With an all-volunteer force, fewer people sign up.  We also have a larger guard and reserve force & smaller active duty force since the 1992/1993 force reduction under Clinton.  Many who do join now intend to retire after 20 years versus spending one 4 year enlistment under the draft.

People like you without any military service have a lack of understanding of military service and how that might be used to impact US politics.  It's not something you can learn by watching MSNBC or reading the New York Times.

"Surveys also showed a decline in how many people thought it was essential to have democracy."

We were originally a Republic, not a democracy.  Admittedly now,  in the case of the federal government it is now an Oligarchy and in the case of our state, a socialist single party state.
Everybody that was in the military took an oath that did not have an expiration date on it.  Officers and enlisted take slightly different oaths but they both swore to uphold the Constitution.
The military would not  "take over".
It doesn't surprise me that so many people would accept military rule, as they vote for Democrat rule which is particularly focused on ignoring the rights of, and controlling the actions of others.

What is so sad and scary is that they have no understanding of the dangers and loss of freedoms and rights that come hand in hand with a military coup or with military rule.

Things in our country would have to degrade much much farther before a coup could ever really be even remotely possible. I think we are more in danger of the 1 out of 6 legislating away our rights and freedoms than a coup actually happening.

Glad I put the HPD liberal troll on ignore, I read enough crap from his ilk elsewhere to keep me on a semi-permanent elevated attitude.

Probably the following: Curfew, door to door confiscation of guns (thank to registration list), no go zones, etc...

But the question is if the military did take over, would HPD comply or be on our side?  Or would they to be disarmed and just given billies to hold.  (WWII occupied city reference).

If this statistic is true, then I think those who believe it are naive and uninformed. Personally, if we could get a hold of some of these people who believe this and show them what real military rule is like from history, I bet they will change their tune.

Liberals salivate at the thought of the military extermination of firearm owners.  The only sure way to be rid of their mortal enemies as their other attempts have alarmed them at the thought of armed resistance.

Once we are purged, they would expect the military to hand power back tho them so the visions of unicorns may proceed.
