6.5 Grendel or 7.62x39 or blackout
« on: November 06, 2018, 09:36:07 AM »
Thinking of getting a Grendel upper to possibly try hunting.

Is cheap wolf grendel available locally?

If not I may get an ak upper or more likely roll my own 300 BO since I already have a BO upper

It seems like 7.62x39 ARs arent uncommon for pig hunting.  I assume it is because meets the minimum energy levels required by DLNR for hunting, the ammo is cheap, easy to find ammo and the rifle is relatively light.

Tnx!

You hunting with dogs?  You’ll need to get close and personal.  Take your Game Ethically @ Humanely.  Use hunting bullets that will result in a quick kill and not let the animal suffer.

Grendel factory ammo is scarce and the most expensive.  Its probably the least available ar15 caliber that isnt big bore(.458 and .50beo more rare)
I see 2-3x the amount of in stock 6.8, .224 valkyrie, .300blk etc

Wgs brings in small amounts of wolf for grendel but hes out and its around 50 cents each instead of the .25 cents people online get em for. That moves it from .223 steel case price to .308 brass old surplus price. He only has some $3 a round grendel in stock as of last week.

Starline brass is $.50 each shipped and hornady 123gr sst is 30 per 100.
Besides wolf steel, youre looking at $1.50 per round for american eagle, hornady black etc.

If you have a blackout upper then id stick with that. Factory ammo seems to always be in stock and it sounds like you can make your own too.
Otherwise you need new bolt+mags in addition to the obvious barrel change for grendel. 10rd elander mags have been sold out more often than not. Still waiting for one during a sale with free shipping. The 24rd mags i have are the same size as 30rd 5.56 gi mags.

I’m too old to keep up with dogs.  May stalk but will likely wait by a spot they travel by

Thanks for the info!!  I was hoping there was cheap wolf Grendel ammo.  I’ll go buy 300 blackout hunting rounds for now.  If this turns serious I’ll get an ak upper from PSA

I was in Pearl City Palisades yesterday afternoon near the bottom, and drove right by a pig and it’s babies walking thru the neighborhood.   There were people within 25’ of the pigs.  Maybe they feed the pigs

I got a couple of ten round E-Landers, shipped a couple of days ago from Brownells, $20.99 each and 10% off with free shipping.

They want too much for shipping. $20. I also dont want to support mark larue. He seems to be pretty abrasive online. I dont care for branded hats or dillo dust either.

I meant brownells has been sold out pretty often recently.
They were out of the 10 and 17 during the last 2 sales before this most recent one. I got four 24rd mags from them with free shipping plus 10 off 75. Best place to buy.

Im pretty sure the 4rd mags are just blocked 10rd mags and are more expensive because of the mag limiter.

Tim808... I too cannot keep up with dogs 🤣🤣🤣.  All my hogs shot within 70 yards. I did dropped one boar at 300 yards.  But then it was with my .308.  Good Luck!  Happy Hunting!

Since you have a blackout already I would load some rounds with the Barnes black tips over h110. They have worked really well for me..

308gunner - 300 yards is a long shot.  Was it standing in the middle of a road?

Hi State - I still have to get dies, components and still work up a load.   Could you suggest a store that has 300 hunting ammo?  I’ll probably pick up a few boxes

Nope.  Walking across a pasture.  Two weeks before that I missed a huge boar at the same spot. Using a Nikon M-308 4-16 BDC Scope I used the hash mark for 300 yards and missed.  When I konked the boar at 300 I dialed up the scope 13 clicks as specified by the Nikon Spot on app.

Not to sure what store would have hunting ammo. I’ve have only loaded for my 300blk. I have some brass that you can start loading with. Gottah double check but I might have some bullets that I can part with too.

308gunner - Dang!  You are blessed to have access to a pasture

Hi State -  No worries I’m good.  I already have some 300 brass.  I’m just lazy and would rather just buy hunting ammo.  Thank you for the kind offer!

If you're spotting and stalking, you'll likely be at close range,  so why not just use a 12ga w/ slugs?

I personally use 7.62x39 for anything over 50yds, but that's only because I consolidated all my platforms to that caliber.

Hmmm.   I do have a shotgun but I don’t manipulate it well under stress. (Ie eject live rounds or forget to cycle)

I can picture myself short stroking it if I missed and a pig charged me.

Oh hell....I’ll try it this weekend

Maybe a semi auto 12ga? I think a mossberg 930 or benelli m2 would work perfectly if you're worried about manipulation And follow up shots, but getting a new shotgun is pointless if you already have a suitable hunting platform.

I prefer my single shot because its a beater if i needed it to be. While they are my favorite general/multi-purpose platform, so i wouldn't feel bad with it getting destroyed in the field because its cheap enough to replace if need be without needing to worry about it.
