Gun in for warranty issue, what if they return with different serial #? (Read 9166 times)

eyeeatingfish

I took my new Ruger LCRX to the range and it was shooting high. I cranked the sight all the way which brought it down but still at 25 yards I was shooting about 12" high.

So I sent it in to Ruger.Iif they end up sending me a gun back with a different serial number do I just walk in an re-register it with the updated serial number of are they going to make me get a permit to purchase all over again?

Permit to acquire
2 week wait
Rapback
Wait in line at hpd for 45 mins
Make 2 trips (not 3 because gun is not at a store)
Pay parking meter

I bet you would get a different answer every time you go there and ask.

And in the meantime they take it from me for the 2 weeks or it is just sitting in my house....

When I get the gun back, if it has a new serial number I will let you guys know what they told me.

i would call HPD and ask for Susie or the other gal (can’t remember her name). Avoid asking one of the cops in there since you’ll probably get a different answer depending upon who you talk to. I suspect it will have to go to your FFL and will come with a letter from Ruger explaining the situation. I don’t think there with be another waiting period either...
Good luck! One more thing... it will have a new serial number....

I am still bummed out that a brand new Ruger would be off like that. No problems with my other 3 rugers though. Well the 22/45 I bought heavily used so that's another story/.

It's a new gun, so ....

You'll have to sign an affidavit stating what happened to the registered gun so they can mark that registration void.

Then I'm 99% sure you'll have to go through the permit process again.

To be safe, you should have Riuger ship the handgun to your FFL, not direct to you.  Legally, you can ship a gun to a gunsmith/manufacturer for work and have it returned.  The returned gun will not be the one you shipped.  So, use an FFL.

Once the FFL has the gun, it's like any other acquisition:  get the serial number from the FFL, then run to HPD to apply for another permit.

I guarantee the lawmakers never imagined this scenario (they don't seem to understand much about guns to begin with), so you're stuck with:

"(a)  No person shall acquire the ownership of a firearm, whether usable or unusable, serviceable or unserviceable, modern or antique, registered under prior law or by a prior owner or unregistered, either by purchase, gift, inheritance, bequest, or in any other manner, whether procured in the State or imported by mail, express, freight, or otherwise, until the person has first procured from the chief of police of the county of the person's place of business or, if there is no place of business, the person's residence or, if there is neither place of business nor residence, the person's place of sojourn, a permit to acquire the ownership of a firearm as prescribed in this section."

They ask for the handgun serial number for the permit for a reason.  I doubt that reason is known or makes sense, but the result is your original permit was approved for one numbered Ruger LCRX.  The serial number can't be changed on the permit after approval.  The only path forward is to apply for a new permit.

If someone at HPD (Suzie) has a "work-aroiund", it would be nice if you shared it, but so far, I've not seen anyone else post one.

Next time tell Ruger you want the same serial number if they replace the gun. Some manufacturers will do it, some don't.

I imagine it really messes with their FFL bookkeeping and database reporting to have the same serial on more than one firearm.

Unless there is something really wrong with the frame, I doubt you’ll get a new one. There are a few things that could cause a problem with revolvers. Barrel, cylinder, timing, fitment issues, rear sight, etc. If all those things are good, they will put a taller front sight blade on it and call it good.

That's a big If (so big it has two i's)
Why would you even think they would do that ?
If you purchase a faulty product and the manufacturer stands behind it, it's usually repair, replace or money back.
In this case due to all of the laws, wouldn't  just be simpler to reimburse you for the cost, perhaps gift certificate to GS you bought it from and have you jump thru the hoops.

A buddy received a new gun for Sig after a couple of returns for functioning issues. This was maybe 5 years ago, but he had to treat it as a new gun in terms of registration.

The issue I can see is that until the process is done, is it treated as an "unregistered firearm" hence illegal?

That's why I recommended if he gets a different gun in exchange that he have it shipped to an FFL.

If Ruger is on the ball, they will do that as standard practice for us gun control states.

But Ruger didn't realize it and sent him a diff one.

EEF, since you have to go through the humbug, ask Ruger for some mags as a gift for your trouble.  Unless it's bolt action, then ask for a shirt.

Seems reasonable, since he'll have to also eat the FFL fee -- unless he doesn't contact Ruger.  In that case, he'll be a felon with an unregistered firearm acquired without a permit.

A couple years back I had to send a Stevens O/U back to Savage because the gun would not lock up. They told me they would send a new one but it would have a different serial number and there would be an affidavit in the box. It arrived a few days later and I took it, the previous registration, the new gun and the notorized affidavit to HPD. I filled out new paperwork and the shotgun was registered. No prob no hassle but it was a long gun....

Serial numbers don't go on the long gun permit.  To me, that makes all the difference.  Handgun permits record the serial number. Once approved, the serial number can't be changed.  Need a new permit.

I assume you had a valid long gun permit at the time.
