Buy Gun Online, Send to FFL, Get Permit After?
« on: November 21, 2018, 12:23:04 PM »
I need to get/renew my long gun permit and I saw an advertisement for the S&W M&P 15-22 for $299.00 from Palmetto State Armory. Comes with a soft case and M&P Red/Green dot sight. Seems like a good package at a decent price. It'd be my first AR and I figure it'd be a good, cheap way to get familiar with the platform and some practice in with the wife and daughter.

Is it possible to buy and ship to an FFL and they hold it until I get the permit? I'm going to go very soon. There was no issues getting my permit a couple years ago, I just didn't have the budget for another firearm, so I let it lapse. If I can't get this 15-22 now, I'm sure I'll buy something online in the future.

Any suggestions on an FFL? Do I pretty much just call the dealer and let them know about my order? Okay I see that PSA has a list of FFL's on file they work with.

Sure, you should be fine. You’ll have to tell your FFL send a copy of his FFL to the selling dealer. Once they have your FFL dealers license they will ship it to your FFL who will hold it until you have a valid permit. Once transferred to you (ATF FORM 4473), it’s your responsibility to get it to HPD for registration. As a for an FFL, I do all my business with Warren Oshiro in Mililani. You can find all his info and phone number off the ATF site.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Should be OK, you have to do that with pistols.  I'd call and let them know first though.

Most sellers have a limited amount of time for you to inspect the firearm you ordered.  Most offer 3-5 days after delivery so you can make any claims for return.

So, even if you have to wait for your permit, DO NOT WAIT to go see your firearm at the FFL's place of business.  Track the package and plan to go within day or two after arrival.

That way, if the seller messed up and sent the wrong firearm, or if it's damaged, or if it's just not as expected for any reason, you can contact the seller within the specified time limit.

If you wait until you get your permit to inspect the weapon, you might lose any right to a refund.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I sat on my hands too long and the package went out of stock, then today they had some stock available and I was able to buy one. I ended up sending to Warren Oshiro as recommended - thanks again! :shaka:
