Significantly improved mosin accuracy

Initially only shot surplus, as mosins in the collection were meant to be shtf tools, but cleaning was a chore, and felt it was time for a change.

Switched out the ammo to S&B 185gr soft points (as this will be used as a hunting platform), removed the stock sights and mounted a Bushnell Trophy Scout that I got on sale on an ATI mosin mount.

I'm used to 4in groups with irons at 50 yards, primarily because I suck and can't see well, but also because I could never dial in the irons. I was shocked at the level of accuracy I was able to achieve on this platform; dialed it into a tack driver at 50yds in less than 30 min (pic below). Ran into issues at 100yds, but I'm attributing it to lack of practice and some mechanical issues that I'm currently working on; had to hold about 4in high towards the end of the day just to get on paper.

Needless to say, I've rekindled my love for the mosin and it's potential, and I'm excited to see how it will perform in the field with putting meat in the freezer.

That's been my experience with the pistol scope. My first scope lasted a couple years because it takes a beating on the rifle so I switched to a dovetail red dot. After a year, bought another AIM scope. They're cheap, $38 on Amazon but amazing clear for the price. I don't bother with heavy loads on the paper targets. I find that IMR 4064 and Reloader 15 are the best. Also, the Hornady 150gr SP is more accurate than the 174gr RN.

You should next try pistol powders, but you'll have to raise the scope elevation by 8" or so. The results are about the same for jacketed bullets and cast boolits. I put a small bit of Dacron in the case to keep the powder near the primer but don't pack it in too far.

What power is the Bushnell Trophy Scout?  Is it 2-7x?

After you ran into issues at 100 yards, were you able to go back to 50 yards?  I'm just wondering if something in the scope changed (reticle came loose, or something else that affects POI) in between there.  I would think that a group like that at 50 yards wouldn't change that much in POI going back to 100 yards.

Nice group on the 50 yard target tho!

.

The scope is 2x7.

Didn't recheck the scope at 50yds because I ran out of time, so hopefully I'll get a chance to figure it out in the coming weeks

Same with mine, 1942. 1 inch group at 50 yards, 4 inch group at 100 yards. With the 2x7, I can barely see the target anyways.

They sold a bunch at Classic Firearms the other day for $300 but went quickly.
