homeless fighting chicken
« on: March 07, 2019, 09:33:48 PM »
A rooster started crowing outside our front door tonight which is very unusual so I went outside to check it out and the thing walked right up to me. Definitely red jungle fowl with comb and claws cropped so it must have escaped from the neighbors. It was basically asking me for help so I gave it some corn and made a place for it to sleep in a parts car that I'm stripping out.

It's very friendly (I picked it up no problem) and even though I don't judge people who fight chickens and am not a vegan hippie I personally draw the line of animal exploitation somewhere before fighting to the death for my entertainment. It's very shiny and healthy looking so someone cared for it a lot but not sure if I want to go looking for the owner because it will inevitably end up as a bloody pile of feathers.

Ideally it will transition back to the wild but still come hang out to eat centipedes, etc but not sure if that's realistic. I've seem to have stumbled into some strange ethical territory.
I’m becoming clinically undepressed and thinking about beginning it all.

Hey, he adopted you, it was his choice for whatever reason.  Let him hang out and enjoy your little buddy.

My friend's wife is a high school teacher.
A chicken decided it was going to lay eggs in her classroom.
It became a pet chicken.

If you want to keep him, and don't want him crowing at any kine times of the night, bed him down somewhere where he can't see lights going on and off etc.

Idk about eating him. Might be too tough even for soup!

Day 1 and he's chilling and following me around. They must have had him on some special fighting chicken diet that's super delicious because he's a very picky eater. When I leave him alone he doesn't know what to do with himself, at least until a wild rooster showed up leading to a battle. I can understand why people fight them because it's truly spectacular to behold, but I was a bit concerned because he doesn't have spurs so I broke them up and put him in a cage until the other rooster left. The good news is he really likes people but it might take some time before he can cruise around on his own.

We have a Kalij pheasant couple the comes around for a bite to eat once or twice a day.  I gather they were imported for game birds, but they are fairly social.  No way would we nail them to eat other than SHTF.

Same for the Frankolins that visit.

Chicken always seemed like a SHTF hedge, producing eggs and more meat.  Having one and becoming attached to it would be an issue.

He really likes this board which makes it difficult to do repairs.

OMG
"strange ethical territory" ?

"escaped from the neighbors. "
"was basically asking me for help"
" put him in a cage"
"I gave it some corn and made a place for it to sleep"
"chilling and following me around"
"When I leave him alone he doesn't know what to do"

Where have we all heard this same exact story before ?

Hey Rocky next thing I'm going to teach him is to put the lotion in the basket. Just kidding of course but here's an update.

So my guess is homeboy got injured at some point but they kept him around to see if he would recover and he didn't so they tossed him out on the street near our house and he wandered up our driveway. Something is definitely messed up with his wing and he can't fly or fully extend one side. Doesn't stop his fighting spirit as he continues to have battles with our Local Champion and even though I usually break it up right away today they chased each other into the bushes so I couldn't stop them and had to wait until they got tired. HR is a good striker, very aggressive, and can hold his own despite his injuries but LC made much better use of the terrain and got him pinned between two banana stalks and would probably killed him if I hadn't intervened. It made me think about use of terrain in training etc and how all the stuff I did at KHSC (when I used to go regularly) is flat dry ground. It definitely makes me consider wanting to go pig hunting with a rifle (even though I'll probably never see one because of the dog and knife pressure) just for the experience of moving through mud, brush, and slopes.

Other than that he's great company although he has no idea what to do around other chickens or in any situation where he has too much freedom. I thought they were pretty much like feathery robots that know all the chicken programming when they pop out of the egg but apparently their moms teach them a lot. He's starting to learn to find food on his own which is good, but now that it's pretty obvious he will die on his own I'll make some sort of temporary shelter so that he can't get into trouble while I'm at work.

On the plus side the wild chickens are much more comfortable getting closer when we hang out together. My friend said she made lay boxes out of 5 gallon buckets and put her wild ones to work so this may be a good excuse to give it a try.

That must have been one tough stringy bento!

Update is yesterday he got his ass handed to him again but this time I let them work it out. Jungle rooster couldn't beat him on the flat ground so he retreated into the bush and when HR followed him in he turned the tables just like before. Had to go in and rescue him again as he was on his back and completely helpless. Today his face is all crusty and he wasn't too excited to go outside but eventually he poked around a bit. Now he makes a sad noise every time I walk away. It's pretty cute. Not sure if he can be adjusted back to the wild at this point but I can probably get him to 50/50.

Chicken harness and take em for a walk.  I've seen vids that their heads are like  a gyroscope (like the targeting system on an Abrhams).  Next time u pick up him. Move his body like how a wave would when you're on a board.  See if the head no move, only the neck and body.  Not sure if online vids are fake or not.  Don't got any flip friends who own chickens.
