Shotgun at rifle range
« on: February 19, 2010, 02:31:03 AM »
I'm I able to shoot my shotgun at the rifle range if I used slugs?  If so can the slug reach the 50 yard targets?

Hmmm, the rules make it a little unclear

Quote
Shotguns

Shotguns may be function fired at this range.  Birdshot and buckshot may be fired into the ground at 35 yards and further but not at 50 yards where the target holders are. Do not shoot in the direction of any target frame. Bird shot and buckshot will ricochet and damage the wood frames.  You may construct and bring your own frame to pattern shot shells or slugs.

From that it looks like you can't use slugs but I seem to remember hearing about people using slugs on the rifle range. Anyway, slugs should reach out to the 100 yd targets just fine.

I regularly see people shooting slugs thru shotguns at the rifle range.  I've even had one time where they were shooting a 50 yard target, the slug was bouncing off the ground behind and ricocheting at an angle... straight into my 100 yard target frame!

The rule about function firing seems to apply only to scattershot.  Shooting slugs seems to count as shooting a rifle.

However, if in doubt, approach a range master before shooting!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I have seen people using shotguns at the waikiki gun club, very limited range though and only birdshot from what i've seen.

I have and I have regularly seen other guys hitting 100 and 200 yrd targets with slugs...def. not hard to do though its is tricky with just the front bead...you prob. need a ghost ring or equal to properly aim.

forgot to mention that this was in the mainland and not at kokohead.

So the parts for a mossberg 500 are able to fit a mavrick 88?  Oh and how much does a box of slugs cost? Wanna get some for some HD.  Who has the best deal on the island for ammo?
