Why was it illegal?

The face is a legitimate target area.

A kick is a legitimate technique.

If there was excessive bruising or bleeding, or if Johnny was knocked out, a judge could consider whether it was "excessive contact". None of that was apparent.

Johnny seemed fine with the winning move, since immediately afterward he presented the trophy to Daniel and complimented him.

No, there was never any instruction to avoid strikes to the face.

I just downloaded the movie (no one here does anything illegal) and watched the whole last section at the tournament
did not see any part where the rules are explained other than the previously posted scene with Ali
