TSA will now be suspicious about why you're trying to prevent them from cutting your locks.

Had a problem like that with my pistol case and noticed it on the way to the airport.  I swivelled my locks horizontal to tighten it, but agent never check.  I'll try this next time.

I recently traveled with my shotgun from HNL to Hilo on Hawaiian Airlines, here is my experience. 
I followed the instructions on TSA and Hawaiian Airlines website:  hardcase 2 short padlocks and 1 long 3 inch padlock, declared it at ticket counter

I had no issue leaving HNL airport:  ticket agent did not request to see firearm,  i hardly had to open the case, only to slip in the orange declaration card in.

HOWEVER, when I flew out of Hilo back to HNL,  the ticket agents there said they could not let the case fly if they could shove their hand inside.  They proceeded to unclasp the hasps, pry it open, and shove their hand inside my case with the 3 locks on.  They said they could not let the case fly due to this AND due to the case having 6 lockholes, that each lock hole MUST have a lock on it.  My flight was leaving in 50 minutes and i still had to get through the TSA checkpoint (thankfully it was a shortline,  this is Hilo we are talking about    )  Soooooo..... I had to go into the terminal buy 4 cheaply made but TSA approved luggage lock at $12 each, go back out to the ticket counter, place the 6 locks on.   After all this running back and forth and elevated  blood pressure levels,  they said wait at the counter,  they took my case to the back room, where I assume a TSA agent, opened all the locks and checked my firearm.  They brought the case back out and 1 of the locks was BUSTED!  They broke 1 of the locks.  But said it was OK to fly!       Not to mention i dont know who touched my case or what they may  or may not have put in my case,  they could have put drugs in there for all I know. 

I assume Hilo's Hawaiian Airlines staff has had issue with employees shoving their hands into places they should not be and taking things they should not be taking.  Even still no where on their website does it state any of this.     and if so why didn't the staff at Oahu''s airport go through the same safety precautions of having locks on all lockholes and ensuring a hand could not fit through the cracks?

Anybody have a similar experience?  what happened?  what airline?    They didnt even weigh my ammo to see if it was under 11lbs.

P.S.  if anyone really wanted to steal my firearm from the case,  all they would need is a pair or wire cutters or tin snips to cut the plastic lockholes and release the padlocks,  its not that hard....

I’ve had United and Hawaiian agents do the “see if I can pry open the case” test before. I don’t recall which airport though.

Hawaiian mentions that any case that maybe pried open may be denied in their “custhelp” section.

I’ve seen some pretty flimsy cases in the baggage claim areas, so they had made the flight. I’m talking the standard Plano type or even the ones that come with many rifles.

This feels like its a case by case situation. Ive never had a Hawaiian airlines agent questions a case I used during transportation. From cheap Plano cases to pelican cases. Never went through Ito or koa. But back and forth from ogg and hnl. The ammunition I did transport they had me take it out and weigh it some times. If it was just a box or two they didn't.

That was the big idea they concocted after the crazy guy in FL claimed his baggage, went to the restroom, and came out shooting.

I'm sure zip ties are going to stop that from happening.     If I wanted a blade to open my gun case, I'd put one in my checked bag -- perfectly legit way to fly with things I can't have in my carry-on. 

Maybe they should start zip-tying all your luggage?
