Analogy vs Argument video (related to gun control debate)
« on: July 23, 2019, 10:08:15 PM »
I like this guy's channel, he really approaches arguments from the point of an accurate logical argument. No politics, no bias, no taking sides, just analyzing an argument logically.

He made this one related to gun control argument comparing guns and pools and points out the difference between an analogy and an argument around the analysis. Good thing to keep in mind when debating gun rights.

What I got out of his analogy was. . .
Having a pool in your backyard allows you the opportunity to "Learn how to swim" so you don't drown in a lake, ocean, river or somebody elses pool.
Having a firearm allows you the opportunity to "Train and learn how defend yourself and  loved ones" so you and your loved ones don't die at the hands of another.

i've learned you cant change someone who's anti 2a unless something happens to them or someone they know.

Had a guy on SSH Hawaii who was super anti.  Only cops and military should have guns.  Ban 100% of them, blah blah.  Well someone he knows was tied up and mutilated and murdered. He bought a gun shortly after that.  At least he was man enough to admit he was wrong and now sees what the purpose of a gun is for.

Been trying for years to change my dads anti 2a thinking.  And I do not want to have to use my gun to show him guns save lives in the hands of law abiding citizens.

But when I do get into a debate, I bring up the example that my classmate was raped.  She has her CCW in her home state, but denied to carry in HI.  Because of that she was not able to fight off her bigger and stronger rapist.  And usually they have no response.

Haha, that is certainly one takeaway from that analogy.

I have definitely come across my share of people who don't want to give an inch. Once debated a black guy and asked him if a white supremacy group showed up to his house with pitchforks wouldn't he want a gun and he said no. But I have come across a number of other people (in both gun and non-gun issues) where through effective communication I have gotten them to soften or to at least concede certain points on the pro-gun side. Ultimately though you won't know until you try so we should never give up before trying.

However I think the point of the video was that analogies alone do not make an argument and that putting forth an analogy alone can backfire because someone might draw a different conclusion as in the John Oliver interview shown. I think this is a useful tip as I myself had used the pool comparison in debates before.

Wasn't the NRA involved with arming blacks during the Jim Crow days?
