While I was thinking about the things in my BOB, I came across the fishing kit I was putting together and it seems to be missing a fishing pole. My original thought was that I could hand line it or make a simple pole if needed, but I don't like that idea anymore and it seems like a waste of time. So i went looking for a compact pole that wouldn't weigh my bag down and came across two candidates

The pen rod is telescoping, very light, uses a special miniature reel, but looks a little flimsy to me.The Emmrod looks weird shaped, made out of stainless steel, uses standard reels, but weighs twice as much as a pen rod. What do you guys think? Do you include a fishing pole in your BOB?

No fishing kit.  I'd just use my regular rod and reel.

FWIW it's not really necessary.  Just buy a fishing net and go to the streams.  Flip rocks and you can catch a lot of shrimp & crayfish a lot easier than catching ocean fish on Oahu (with the exception of the tilapia in Oahu's streams which are quite easy to catch).

I agree with G and everything he said.  I would just use my regular fishing gear.  In reality though all you need to survive on Oauhu is a some 6lb - 12lb test line some small limerick hooks and some small sinkers.  No need for a pole you can handline it or even use a stick you find in the area.  You can catch some huge oopu in the streams if you know where to go and all kind edible reef fish along the shore.  They won't be huge, but at least you can feed your family.

Haven't gone fishing in overy 25 years, so no fishing kit in my BOB.  And, I do not see much use in having one in a bug out situation especially on Oahu.

My BOB is designed to take me back home, or to a friendly location... i.e. family or friends house. Should find fishing stuff if need there...

A small altoids tin with hooks, lead, line, lure, etc would be cherry though....

I assumed if SHTF and the situation required bugging out then my family and friends wouldn't be at their homes anymore and looters would have completely wiped out all supplies. Given that situation, I want my bug out bag to be self sustaining for as long as possible.

BOB's, GHB's, or what eva's, we all have the same goal... survive and take care of ourselves and family.  No biggie

I still like the idea of one fishing kit in the bag.
