Showing a gun for sale

Where do you guys meet potential buyers when selling a pistol. I  can’t do it at my house, the wife doesn’t want people she don’t know around.

Meet at a local gun store if its closer

Remember HI law has a places to keep written in it.  So although you can keep/show the gun at your home or business, the buying party cannot posses it there.  It is not their  home or their place of business.  Unless you allow the buying party to "sleep over", but if they change their mind and don't sleep over after the transaction is done, then that's OK too.

So most meet at HPD or the range which is neutral for both you and the receiving party.

Not a good option unless you first get the owner's permission.

They pay for that location to make a profit selling guns and supplies, not to facilitate private party sales of other people's guns.

HPD

where do you show the gun exactly at HPD?  inside the doors?  or outside but on HPD premises?  it would be weird to pull out a firearm from case in front of HPD
If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.

Uncase and clear it inside the firearm registration room where the clearing station is.

If it's not too crowded, show it in there.

There's also the corner of the outer room where the sink is, just past the inking glass for fingerprints.  Not in direct line of sight of the records personnel behind the glass wall.

Since the title of this thread is SHOWING a gun for sale, your options are narrow.
I would not go to a gun store unless my friend works there.
A gunsmith would be a good place assuming the gunsmith is going to check it.
I would not go to HPD either. ....very bad idea.
A legal option would be to rent a hotel room so it becomes a place of sojourn.
A stretch would be the airport since it is legal to take your gun to the airport.

If the firearm is registered with HPD, taking the firearm to show and then have the buyer apply for his pistol permit makes HPD a good choice.  It also allows the officer taking the application to get the owner's info directly.

I don't understand the "very bad idea" comment.  Please explain.

You go into the registration room but you don't really have any official business bringing your gun with you  since you're just there to show it to a potential buyer.
So you whip the gun out in the corner of the room and your possible buyer starts handling it in front of a half dozen nervous cops.
Even if the buyer agrees to purchase it, there was no real need for the gun to be there.

There're no reasons included in the statute.  It just says the police station is a legal place to which you can transport firearms.

Show me in the law where there's an "authorized purpose" required when carrying firearms between lawful places.

Quote
[§134-23]  Place to keep loaded firearms other than pistols and revolvers; penalty.  (a)  Except as provided in section 134-5, all firearms shall be confined to the possessor's place of business, residence, or sojourn; provided that it shall be lawful to carry unloaded firearms in an enclosed container from the place of purchase to the purchaser's place of business, residence, or sojourn, or between these places upon change of place of business, residence, or sojourn, or between these places and the following:

     (1)  A place of repair;

     (2)  A target range;

     (3)  A licensed dealer's place of business;

     (4)  An organized, scheduled firearms show or exhibit;

     (5)  A place of formal hunter or firearm use training or instruction; or

     (6)  A police station.

     "Enclosed container" means a rigidly constructed receptacle, or a commercially manufactured gun case, or the equivalent thereof that completely encloses the firearm.

     (b)  Any person violating this section by carrying or possessing a loaded firearm other than a pistol or revolver shall be guilty of a class B felony. [L 2006, c 66, pt of §1]

Thanks guys. I think I’ll go to HPD. It would make it easier for the buyer to apply for the permit. The only thing  is going there and the person is not interested in buying. Then having to go back if someone else is interested.

That's the price you pay if you don't want to sell it through a shop, or in your case the spouse doesn't want strangers coming to your house to look at guns (I can't really fault her logic there).  I once went to a guy's house to look at a 1911 and he had it out on the coffee table with loaded magazines laying next to the piece!

The range seems to be a good location but you should make it clear up front if you'll allow test firing.

I wouldn't show my firearm to someone I don't know at my house, i'd rather go kokohead.  bc I don't want an unfamiliar person to know where I live and that I have firearms in the house.
or if they say they'll take it without seeing it, i'd go HPD and just do the transaction there

I've sold one rifle here and met the buyer at the range to prove that it shoots tight groups. The sale at HPD thing always puzzled me. Does seem like a bad idea.

Based on the cocksuckery that I"ve experienced from HPD i would care to keep my firearms sales as isolated from them as possible.

Best and easiest is to meet at the range to show a firearm to a potential buyer.

I've met people selling guns

at their home,
at HPD,
and at the range.

The officers see people inspecting each others' firearms there all the time.  When someone comes in with an unusual, old, or badass weapon, people ask if they can see it.  The Cops don't care.
