The problem is with the waiting list. Some guys come to shoot 10 rounds and leave within the first hour. Others shoot until 12-1pm like me. If you are one of the first names on the waiting list your wait could be less than an hour to maybe 2-3 hours depending on availability. If you get your name in the 10th-20th slots who knows? I went there once and arrived at 7am. Got my name in the 3rd or 4th slot. I didn't get a bench until 11am. I figure if I'm going to have to wait 4 hours to shoot then I get there around 5am and make sure I get a bench. Some people like coming around noon to 1pm. But the last time or two I was there on Sunday the wait was still an hour or two at that time. I would think getting there around 1-1:30pm would be best as they close at 3pm and you could probably get an hour or two of shooting in.

So what do you guys do while waiting? I'm guessing you guys have to wait close by to hear if/when you name is called?

What about the guys who go early and make the cut. Do you guys line the benches with your stuff and wait for opening signal?

I usually go on the Fridays that I have off and some Saturdays.  When I go on Fridays, you can get there as late as a little after 11 am and still have lots of benches.  A few times I've been there where there were a couple of benches that were open just before noon.

When I go on Saturdays, I try to get there around 6-6:30 am to be sure that I get a bench in the area that I prefer.  If not, I think getting there around 7 ish would be fine.  I've also gone to shoot pistol first and there are usually plenty of benches around 1 pm.  So depends on what you want/need to do, that is an option and usually fine for me.

What gets me is the disrepair of the facility.  Like the section of roof that is missing and even closed down the range last fall.  There are so many people volunteering to fix up the place, but due to liability and union work BS, nothing gets done.  Still, it's one of the few, or for some the only, shooting facility available.  I'm hoping things get better, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hmm, I take it that most of this waiting in line stuff is for the rifle side? I'm most likely going to be just a hand gun owner for the following year so..So maybe my troubles wont be as bad lol *crosses fingers*

I've only gone down there early for the rifle side.  I've never gone down early for pistol.  I know some guys go and shoot at the bullseye pistol range and silhouette range (on the weekends only) if they get there late and no rifle benches.  If I am going just for pistol, I just go down whenevers and see what's open.   I haven't had to go on a waitling list, yet (knocking on wood).  Though I've read reports of waiting list for the silhouette range.

What do I do when I get there early?  I just put my gear on or around the bench that I am reserving.  I usually bring breakfast and eat and sometimes feed those deaf cats.  Sometimes I talk story with some of the other guys.  I haven't gone in a while, but when I was going regularly, you usually see the same guys.  Some guys just go down to hang out and talk story and don't shoot or take a bench.

My conspiracy theory:
The C&C of Honolulu is trying to curb gun ownership by allowing the facility to fall into disrepair and fade away. No shooting range less reasons to own a gun on Oahu.

Talk story or read a lot. Yes you need to wait around and listen for your name.

What about the guys who go early and make the cut. Do you guys line the benches with your stuff and wait for opening signal?
Yes.

Hmm, I take it that most of this waiting in line stuff is for the rifle side?
Correct. Though I have had to be on a waiting list at the pistol range once before. It was not a long wait.

I'm most likely going to be just a hand gun owner for the following year so..So maybe my troubles wont be as bad lol *crosses fingers*
You won't be disappointed. The pistol range is also well run.

I was wondering if we as a " club" could help repair the roof on the rifle side. Time, materials, or both?

Sorry for the slight thread drift, but does anyone know if all that pre-1030 am bench saving madness has been resolved on the rifle side on weekdays?
I was there Last Friday and all the benches were taken at about 10:30, what's really starting to piss me off are the guys who bring the Japanese tourists and take up between two and three benches while the rest of us gotta wait, they gotta be making money off of these tourists, how is this allowed? Anybody know? I also watched 4 "old timers" take up 4 separate benches and fire about 1 to 2  shots every half hour and talk story and wander away from there benches while there was a huge wait list and they did this from opening to closing. At one point one of them sat backwards leaning on his bench and talked on his cell phone with one of his earplugs out for 45 minutes!!! I even took a picture of it cause I was getting so annoyed. I realize they were there early to get the bench but there's alot to be said for common courtesy, especially if  you see there are guys lining up to use the place that will do some actual shooting.

I can't think of any legal issues with the Japanese tourists except that they could be operating under the table and avoiding taxes. It seems like something that the State or C&C would want to take a piece of. At the very least they should pay a fee to the range to get some things fixed up.

I think we've all encountered the slow shooting old timers hogging benches all in a row. The worst part is they bring their kids and/or grandkids on the weekends and have them do the same thing on the bench next to them. They're breeding a whole new generation of inconsiderate jackoffs. Maybe RO's can do something? Anyone tried crouching between their benches and pelting them with brass?

I hear you.  it pisses me off that our taxes pay for the place and we all gotta wait for 2 van loads of tourists who have to be taught and watched over every second because it is there first time shooting or even holding a firearm. It wastes everybody's time except the guys making the $.

I'll do that next time, it'll probably be this week

Don't know anything about bench-saving but things are still kinda tight unless you get there at least an hour before it opens. I went yesterday (Wednesday) and got there 11:10 a.m. I got the last open bench. Benches did open up around 1 p.m. and by the time I left around 2 p.m. there were many open benches.

Okay, thanks.  sounds like its gotten a little better.  For awhile if you weren't there by 1030 or so, especially on a Wed. you were out of luck because a few guys would be saving a buch of benches for their friends.  I know it was brought to the attention of the staff, but I didn't know if anything had been done.

That sounds like a good idea rofl  If you see any assholes taking up benches and not really shooting, just set up on the floor next to them and position yourself so your casings always hit them in the face.  Then when they ask you what your problem is, you can turn to them and say "well if i had a bench i wouldn't have to shoot in all these weird positions".  Then continue to blast them in the face with more casings.

I didn't really know where to post this or clutter the boards by making a new thread so I'll just post it here since it's about koko head.

After they call a cease fire, and while people are out on the field checking/changing targets, can someone who is sitting on a bench(behind the yellow line of course) be loading mags with the only fire arm on the table in front of the yellow line?

Yes you can load mags behind the yellow line.  So long as you don't approach the bench or handle firearms (either on the bench, ahead of the yellow line, or behind the yellow line) you are OK.

Believe or not, the C&C Dept of Parks and Recreation has the range repair on their list.  They have received budget approval for consultant fees (don't ask how much) and yet to receive approval for the repair budget (don't ask how much).  Of course, it is progressing like molasses in the wint just like any government work.

A friend of mine works in the C&C DPR.
