Pistol braces to go the way of the bump stock
« on: August 07, 2019, 02:19:55 PM »
Read some fake news headlines and the words "pistol brace" was used.  Apparently, it makes a SBR more deadly.  Even though shooters brace was missing the straps.

Wait didn't he die in 2014?

It was an AR pistol not a SBR.

I'm not sure if anyone actually uses a pistol brace as intended.

The ATF has gone back and forth on its answer. The agency has issued several open letters, which
are not law but indications of how the agency plans to interpret the law.

In 2012, the ATF issued a letter saying braces could be attached to a pistol without turning the weapon
into a short-barreled rifle.

In 2015, the agency said firing a pistol from the shoulder with a brace would [not] (I think that's an error -- it WOULD) constitute a "redesign"
and would require all the necessary paperwork and taxes.

When brace manufacturers sought more clarification, the ATF again appeared to change its stance in
2017. The ATF said "incidental, sporadic, or situation ‘use’ of an arm-brace" from the shoulder did not
constitute a redesign, but taking "affirmative steps to configure the device" as a shoulder stock would,
such as removing straps intended to wrap around the arm.

The photos I saw of the weapon show the brace straps were removed. That's against the law.

If you get rid of braces, does anyone think that'll stop the next person to use an "AR-15 pistol" from attaching an actual rifle stock to it?

A ban on braces won't make 1 iota of a difference.  Same weapon.  Same mags.  Same ammo. Same short barrel.  The stock/brace makes little to no difference in the firearm's "lethality."

I think pistol braces are dumb in that people are pretending stocks aren't stocks but I also don't think we need to ban pistol braces.  I was ok with banning bump stocks because they could make a very significant difference for an active shooter but I don't think pistol braces provide anywhere near the advantage that bump stocks provide.

"Bump stock" is just a marketing name for an accessory that can perform a bump fire action.

Bump firing can be accomplished in many ways.  It doesn't require a bump stock.  Pretending absence of a bump stock eliminates the ability to bump fire is just plain ignorant.

Also a bump stock, just like bump firing does take practice to do well.  You can't just pick up a rifle that has a bump stock and expect to be able to bump fire.

Oh... the irony.

"The Dayton shooter modified his gun with a 'pistol brace,' a device that could become the new bump stock of the gun-control debate"

Do not think that they won't go after these. Both sides of the aisle want guns taken away and if they can do it incrementally, they will. It's just a speed boat vs a row boat. Both will take you over the falls. It's just the speed at which you get there.

True but the bump stock type devices enable must more accurate use of bump fire. Good like getting that with your belt loop, plus they can't make belt loops illegal.
