Someone once told me that in a long term disaster, make sure you don't look well fed or others can tell you have food supplies.

Or look well fed and have a rifle slung. Oh wait OC still illegal, even during disaster.

I'm one of "those guys" that prepare for disasters.
Every place I've lived as an adult, has been declared a "disaster area"
I just seem to pick them,  from 100 year Blizzards, droughts, floods, exploding volcanoes,
earthquakes et al, been there and done that.  I don't evacuate to some school.
I deal with the problem directly at my place of residence.
I keep a very good supply of food, water, tools, and soon to go totally off grid.
Most people don't even have 10% of what I keep as a first aid kit.
I have Israeli battle bandages( Americans won't sell theirs).
I'm not paranoid, but I've been through enough disasters to
know that you need certain things to survive and Safeway or
Walmart isn't it.
I live in a rural area on an outer island so this prepping stuff is
second nature to us.
Lots of good survival sites out there check them out.  Be aware
of the nut cases.
Last thing - if you know how much ammo you have, you don't have enough.

How often do you refresh some of those first aid items? Many have expiration dates. I’ve given some to medic and EMT friends and have had “show and tell” type informal teaching sessions.

That is a hard one!
Hydrogen Peroxide pure and simple dies you have to cycle that as a
chore. Use it or lose it.
Betadine also goes bad but not to the point of uselessness.
I have Merthiolate that will probably last forever.  But it has a date code.
If you don't have this stuff you are really lacking!
I have some Steroid anti fungal stuff over 6 years out of date
and it still works fine.
I'm not a doctor so I keep stuff longer.
Y'all know they are still finding food a thousand years
old that is still "good".
I guess you have to make a legal vs practical decision.

Fun one.
I don't think God is chasing me down.
I've just lived in lots of places.
CA
WA
ND
Guam
HI
MS

These places all have Natural
"occurrences"
The list is long and exceptional.

I've spent 5 years in OK with biannual "tornado seasons," complete with tornado warnings and watches being tracked nightly on the TV.  One jumped my apartment complex and wiped out a neighborhood just a mile North of us.  Living near water was a plus.  The change in temp above the lake cause the tornado to skip directly over us.

I moved to HI in 93, less than a year after Iniki.  So far, I've yet to experience anything close to that size hurricane living on Oahu. You better hope I never move away!

I remember watching Tornadoes bouncing up and down in Minot AFB ND when I was fixing a KC-135 Avionics problem.
First thing I did was look at how much fuel I had, it was over 100,000 pounds. I was aged 19.
We used to give our kids a lot of knowledge.
Today we treat them like idiots.
Can't buy booze or guns.
Aloha.

One of those KC's might have refueled my AWACS to/from Saudi Arabia.

Or, maybe it was the one that had a boom problem and caused us to land in Maine to refuel?  We supposedly took on enough fuel to get to OK plus an hour, but the winds were much stronger than forecast.  Caused us to burn fuel twice as fast while flying half the distance.  Spent the night at Warner Robins AFB, OH.  Loooong trip home after a month in Riyadh.  Still, more comfortable than the C-141.

All that because a KC-135 couldn't refuel us.  Bummer.

If they were desperate or if they wanted the firearm even more than the food, sure/ Sooner or later you have to sleep and that would be the best time to strike.
