+1 for zippys fried chicken. I just tried it a few days ago. It is much better than the rubba chicken they used to serve.

I used to laugh my okole off when I watched the zippys commercial on tv that showed the little boy shaking his head as he
struggled to bite into the fried chicken. He reminded me of a little dog trying to bite off a piece of a chew toy.

Yeah, I used to crack up watching that little boy gnawing on that chicken.  I used to think careful, your baby teeth might get stuck in the chicken.....

The other day my daughter came home and told me if I wanted to eat chicken.  I said hell yeah (actually I said f*ck yeah).  The chicken was really ono! 

I told her, where did you buy this chicken.  She said her friend's father made it.  Retired from the navy as a cook.

Man, this guy should market his fried chicken.  It was really good.

I've been in Hawaii over 20 years now.
I think I have been to only three dine-in restaurants
by my own choice, Kens, Cafe100 and the
Japanese cultural club East of Suisan.
The rest were guest driven eg "lets
try Outback".

Perhaps it is because my wife was a
professional cook, but what is it about
eating at a dine-in restaurant?
They suck!

You can't just get up and get some more
food.

You have irritating people that won't shut up
disturbing a quiet meal.

You have to tip a person 20% for something
you could easily do.

They changed?  I always liked Zippy's fried chicken, except for a few months maybe 3-4 years ago where they changed chicken thigh supplier.  It was a different cut with a back flap piece of bone.  Anyways, I thought it was junk.  Apparently many others too because they brought back the original not long after. 

While I like crispy chicken coating, Zippy's chicken can be tougher.  I assumed it was dependent on how long under the heat lamp it was.

If you were able to chew on the old rubba zippys chicken you must have had good teeth, just like the boy in the zippys commercial. Hey drck you weren't by any chance the boy in the zippys commercial right? Jus checking.

On the other hand I doubt that Nancy Peloshee and her dentures would have been able to handle the old Zippys chicken.

This brings up a memory of growing up on Maui.
October was time for the Maui County Fair. My mom would work in the Mormon church booth making fried chicken plates.
It was a very simple plate with fresh fried chicken and rice with namasu on the side.

Anybody been to the fair in recent years?
Curious to know if the church still does that.

I used to like their Pronto Pups.  I remember the fair used to to also have demolition derby - can you imagine having an event like that today in Hawaii?  Good times.

Masa's market in Hauula is not bad if you get it early, otherwise it's Popeye's.
We keep trying but can't get it "just right" at home.
