Just a heads up. I went to the firearms division today and saw a sign posted stating that their computer is down and no out out of state registrations are being processed. There were no dates on the sign so I don't know how long it's been this way nor when it will be up again but you know how quickly the government works.

So if i bring in a gun from out of state i dont have to register it?

I also wondered, if you buy a gun out of state and then bring it back home, does that state send something to hawaii saying you took the gun home?  Or how would hpd know about it?

I was down there a few weeks ago and the computers were up and running, something recent.

Ehh, perhaps they forgot to take it down after the computer got fixed.....or its been intermittently been going down due to shotty repairs

The sign has been up for almost 2 weeks and doesn't amount to a whole lot. I've taken 3 new guys from my command while that sign has been up and they had no problems registering their firearms. In and out within 30 minutes.

Registering isn't necessarily protection from anything...The only reason to do it (that matters) is because it's the law. Well maybe that and the fact you'll get hassled when trying to sell it.

They wouldn't know if you bring something in, but if you're already a firearms owner in the State you should know what the law requires. Most that get caught are military new to the State, who claim ignorance and register after the fact (they do the same for non-mil too). Personally I believe every responsible firearms owner should make it a point to know and follow the laws for their area. It's ridiculous, but given how things are...I wouldn't want to give law makers any reason to create stricter and dumber requirements.

No worries, next time I visit Ill bring the SR15, its registered there already.

I would have to say no such luck as there is a paper trail even though the computer records may have been lost. Just remember they issue a piece of paper with all the info on it. And in my case everything was multi-part hand written document as my guns were registered in Hilo.

Last time I went in for the long gun permit and the handgun permit they asked me for my old expired long gun permit. He said it helps them if I keep the expired one to show them when I apply for a new one.

They did the same thing with me, asked for the expired one.

turned in expired rifle permit and got a new one sans mugshot?!

Time before last I didn't bring my expired permit and got a ration of shit,  last one I brought it in they looked at it for one whole second then tossed it back out under the window.   Can't win. 

I think it's more to help you fill the new one out faster.

Should shitcan the whole process all together. (wishful thinking)

Picture ID and proof of citizenship if born out of the U.S.
FIll out forms
Register within 72 HRS of arrival to island

Arrive in the AM and allow a couple of hours at the PD because of the number of weapons you have.
BIGGEST NO GO, no pistol mags over 10 round capacity.

I always fly with my weapons in Pelican cases, double locked. Any hard case that meets federal airline standards will do;
Declare firearms at the check-in counter ( have them unloaded with no ammo in mags)
Report to the TSA counter for inspection, they usual throw in a "inspected" tag, but not always .
Check your weapons case like any other piece of luggage

Also, depending on the airline you can fly with ammo.Delta allows 8 pounds, must be in boxes that separate each round, original box is good. It can be carried in your regular luggage or with the weapons.

If you're PCS'ing, most airlines waive excess weight fees and give you a few extra bags free of charge,policies vary.

Wait a sec, if they have computer records, why do they still have paper records?  Would probably make the waiting line faster and save costs if they went to computer only.
