Went to the silhouette range for the first time this past weekend.  Had a lot of fun, but the first thing I noticed was how far away the first set of targets were.  Any idea what's the distance to the first row of metal hanging plates?

Also, another observation/rant.  I was there for 3 "change-overs" where they paused the shooting to set the targets back up.  I counted 28 people there shooting, yet all three times I noticed that there were the same 5 people setting up the targets every time.  Really people?  Some of the shooters looked like they could have benefited from the walk out there.  Interesting mentality.

 

That's a common complaint from shooters at the silhouette range.  Being one of those tubby types that doesn't like to walk out there and reset targets, I don't shoot at any of the ones that fall down.  Hearing the "ping" is good enough for me.  Since I don't knock down any targets, I don't feel obligated to go set any back up. 

Hmm, that's a good approach.

I also noticed that the guy next to me would keep a stash of loaded magazines off to the side of the table and put them in his pocket after the cease fire was called.  That way after the all clear was called he would be the first one to the bench with a loaded magazine in his 10/22 and pick off the newly put up targets.

That's pretty much what I do when I shoot at the silhouette range.  I like the silhouette range because you don't need to bring your stand and can just shoot.  I do shoot at the bullseye range from time to time, particularly when I get a new pistol and want to check/verify the siting.

I am not sure if they have moved the racks since, but I took my laser range finder one time and the first rack was at 60 yards and the second rack was at about 80 yards.  The first rack has the large rectangle steel plate.  Looks about 4 feet or so square.  The second rack had a larger circle with a black inner ring painted/drawn on it.  This was in October of last year and the last time I was there the targets looked very different.  I haven't gone in a few months, so I don't know what's out there now. 

There is also another row of targets on the right side that I lasered at about 200 yards.  Not too many targets out there though.

Same here I just shoot the stationary targets, not like I could hit most of the little ones with a pistol anyway.

Sunday was the first time I shot at the silouette range too... I really enjoyed it.  I also noticed that only a few people went out to help set up the targets.  The guy next to me went out, so the second "break" I was there, I went out with him.  I also felt a bit more confident in shooting the "fall over" targets after that... I wasn't sure if there was some kind of rule or unspoken rule of who can or cannot shoot at em'.  Regardless, I had a lot of fun... and only shot at the bigger "fall over" targets... as those tiny bolt things were so small, and my eyes are so bad, that yeah, not gonna happen, at least not with iron sights.  Heh.

I agree, I was there on Sunday didn't shoot any of the fall down targets so I didn't feel a need to set them up. 

I love shooting the little fall down targets and always go out to reset.

I am of larger stature and I go out and pick up the little targets. For me they are the most fun to try and knock down. I even go out to the farthest targets and set them back up as I like to try and knock those down as well. I do notice that those who like to knock down the little targets are not necessarily the ones who go set them back up again.

First row of targets is over 50 yards.  I want to say it's about 60 to 65 yards, but it's been a while since I shot the distance with a laser.

Same here.  I don't shoot the stuff that falls over so I don't go out to reset them.

I understand the mentality that if one didn't shoot the target down, then one doesn't really need to reset any targets.

Maybe it is just me, but my thought is if more people come to put up the targets then everyone can get back to shooting quicker and make the most of their $5 there. Laulima. Am I just too naive to think this? 

So if one guy shoots down all the targets, he should be the only one picking them up? Maybe so, but I think of it this way: for each minute spend watching these guys setting up the targets, I've lost a minute of shooting. I help to set up the targets regardless of whether I shoot at them and each of you should, too.  Aside from the obvious benefit of getting the job done faster, it gives you a better perspective of the targets' size and distance and gives you an opportunity to hit on the guy/gal shooting next to you.

Won't be hitting on any guy shooting next to me, especially if he is armed.   

Usually when i go silhouette, i choose one non-knock down target and i shoot at that ONE target all day......cause i can't shoot for shit

The way i look at it is, the faster i get back to shooting, the more ammo i going shoot.  So i save money if it takes longer

This is actually a general question for everyone, but when you go to the range do you shoot everything you have or do you come with more than what you plan on shooting and save the rest?

For me, I just ration myself and shoot all the ammo I bring to the range.  Which normally comes out to 150rnds of 9mm and 300rnds of .22.  I'm interested in what everyone else goes through.
