Bringing a LARGE collection into the state
« on: November 17, 2019, 07:04:29 PM »
So my parents live in Kona, been there for coming up on a decade. They're getting older; wife and I think it might be time to be closer to them. I've been offered a pretty decent job in Kona and we're seriously considering accepting and making the move out there.

So everything I have is 100% legal per state law, I'm aware of the 72 hour registration... What's the easiest way to bring in 50 firearms and in excess of 30k rounds of ammo? greatly considering putting them in a half container with the few personal items that we want to bring. 100% serious in regards to quantities, my collection has gotten somewhat out of control.

Also if anyone knows a good forum for 4x4s that'd be great... Got a highly modified truck I want to bring and I'm not sure on the legality of the truck.

Contact the Hawaii island Police department and make a appointment to bring it in for registration.  They may ask you to bring it one crack so they need to set aside someone to help you directly.
Getting the ammo here in the container maybe difficult as matson may have restrictions on it due to hazmat purposes

Spoke with someone at Matson today, the firearms are a non issue but the ammunition is certainly an issue and I'm at a loss as to what to do with that.

Check with freight forwarders for the ammo.

I'd try to sell the ammo before moving.  Couple whatever you make selling it with the money you'd have to spend shipping it (freight, HAZMAT fees, hassle), you might be better off (and might even save some money) by replacing it after the move.

Unless you have impossible-to-find calibers or special loads that you can't replace through Hawaii retailers -- or through members on this forum  -- I'd opt for just selling the old and buying new.

There are occasional ammo sales in this forums classified ads posted by members planning to relocate.  If you aren't in a hurry to restock, you could find good deals here and in the process help out another shooter with a "stockpile."

The caveat to that is you'll be on an Island other than Oahu.  That can create it's own set of circumstances trying to buy ammo locally.

Good luck!   :shaka:

My reply had time out so my original message was lost.
Personal message me and I'll make some suggestions.

Two thoughts
I'd be willing to share now;
#1 Is that if you like your guns, don't come to Hawaii,
OR keep them on the mainland with
trusted family and just FedEx the particular gun(s) you want to shoot
and send the gun(s) back when done hunting or plinking.
#2 If you insist on keeping them with you, call the cops here
They typically only allowed one gun per person to be registered per day
in the past.  It was an effort by the local police to prevent people like
you from easily moving in with a gun collection.

Sounds like a lawsuit to me if this is true. Law enforcement keeping you from being in compliance with the law is illegal. Something to bring to FBI & ATF if really goes on
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

Also consider how close we were last year to a semi-auto ban bill passing that would have made anything that could take a magazine illegal.

If the police want to make an example, who are they going the arrest first?  Probably the guy that just told the police where to find 50 firearms to confiscate.

The news would love that too considering they just spent a week reliving a mass shooting of 7 people from 20 years ago.

Lifes not that simple and I don't have family outside my parents, who live in Kona. So to store them with someone trusted on the mainland isn't really an option.

Thanks for the heads up on the one gun per day thing, I'll have to look into that.

Also call the shippers.  I know a few guys who had to change shipping companies because they will no longer ship ammo (politics).

Fed Ex ground to Aloha Freight Forwarders in Compton, California.
I used Honolulu Freight Service when I moved back home from Seattle.  I don't recall how much ammo I brought back, but it wasn't that much.  That was about 15 years ago now, so not sure what their ammo policies are.  I think my buddy used them for a group buy a while back, but not sure.

The Compton, CA location  :shake:

Hopefully you are aware there is  almost no place to shoot on the Big island.   A scruffy patch of dirt down near South Point, and a bulldozed area over near Hilo.

No regular range with a berm, target area, or anything.   Was supposed to have a formal range several years ago but the liberals managed to stall that.

Ridiculous, but maybe think how much effort to get your collection here and have no place to use them.

Very accurate, but you forgot the county trap and Skeet range in Hilo.
There are no rifle/pistol ranges with organization, facilities ,and a formal RSO
on the Big Island.
If you know someone there are many private areas where you can blast away.
I know one place where I've heard full automatic gunfire at night.
I didn't call the cops because they would not have gone there and they
probably know who they are anyway.  Plus I don't talk to cops if I can help it.
There was also a place off the Mauna Kea access road, but with the protests going
on,  that is probably not wise to use today.
Bottom line is get to know the place, make some friends.
It is also very wise to have an up to date Hunters license from your
state before you leave.  You generally have to have a Hawaii hunting license
to have a  loaded firearm on DLNR land, even if you are just doing target practice.
If you don't have a valid hunters license from another state or a diploma
from a hunter safety class,  they will make you take a Hawaii Hunter safety class.
The Hawaii hunter safety class is a joke and has a very long wait list for classes.

Stay "Grey" and don't stand out.
Welcome to Hawaii.

Wrong ranch, but I know what you mean.
Cops usually are over Mauka of Kawaihae,  on that ranch.
I wonder if they know that we know where they gather to practice?
Only one way out.
No threats intended by me.

Went to register a rifle today.  Officer behind the glass says you have 5 days and recommended just bring in the 50 one time.  Says he got the manpower but I'd call and go in on day one or two just to be safe.

So I got my situation taken care of. Debating on taking my safe or selling it. Company is paying for a 45 foot conex but I'm hesitant about bringing my safe just because I'm aware of how horrible it is to move (1350lbs empty) and running the math on the conex I'm running out of room between the vehicles and toolboxes. Thinking about buying two smaller safes, what are my options on the big island?
