Radar and the "Leeward Side" of the Islands,,,,?
« on: June 03, 2012, 06:37:22 AM »
I was fiddlin' around checking the weather hereabouts and looking at the weather radar here (Colorado):

http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=ftg&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=no

when I noticed  that over on the left in that screen, there was a link to the Hawaiian radar:

http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/hawaii.php

Kinda found it interesting, and I noticed that most of the cloud cover is to the southeast of the Islands, viz the BI and Kauai images (as of this moment).  Is that what is referred to as the leeward side of the Islands?  Or is that just an artifact of the range capabilities of the radar or something?

Windward/Leeward refers to (normal) upwind/downwind sides of an island using the center as reference. The cloud accumulation seen on weather radar usually outlines the mountain ranges. It's not a gap in radar coverage, it really is just wetter on the windward side.

OK, thanks.
