Went to koko head today and witnessed a guy getting kicked out of the range for the first time ever.

Did you happen to overhear what the argument was about?

Sometimes you have to argue =p.

I wasn't there but my friend said the guy felt the range officer was bossing him around after calling his name when a bench opened up. Sounded like the guy was taking his time and range officer was trying to expedite cause it was during a cease fire and people were out on the range. Who knows but I don't think a gun range is the best place to have an argument.....

I saw a guy have a pretty stupid argument with the older stocky Japanese RO last week because he kept going in front of the yellow during cease fire to play with his gun and go into his bag that was next to the bench. After he did this 3 or 4 times the RO lost it (understandably), and all the kid kept saying is that he's in the military and he knows his rights and he can touch his property whenever he wants. The RO tried to keep his composure while this kid was being a total douche bag and finally he pulled the kid aside and told him very clearly if he did it one more time he'd have to leave or be removed. Didn't see what happened after that but I never saw the kid again I'm assuming he just went home. He looked like he shrank when he noticed every single guy in the area was getting pissed off that he was acting like such a jackass.

Last time I was there for some reason my freind walked across the line and handed me the gun, RO flipped out a little....meh...I just anwser all their questions with a yes..
Though it's frustrating if you forgot to open the slide or whatever and go back over to lock it open and then there like BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE!....ahha kinda like getting yelled at my lifeguards.

I've seen one of the pistol range RO's get into it with a guy at the pistol range. He uncased his gun while people were down range. The guy was arguing with the RO while clearly being wrong. I thought that guy came pretty close to getting kicked of the range.

I've seen Cy get into someone's face on the rifle range after he uncased his rifle behind the yellow line and basically swept the entire line, including Cy while he was sitting at the RO station. This guy didn't answer back, so it quickly calmed down.

I'm all for yelling at people who are handling guns while people are downrange.

I definitely don't want to get shot because some nimrod wants to touch his gun while I'm repairing a target.

The rules are there for the safety of everyone.

If you are not in compliance with rules of gun safety and range rules, expect to be forewarned - once. After that, the RO will have no choice but to 86 your arse. As long as I've been going to Ukumehame, I've seen a few people kicked to the curb and they had to leave when instructed to. Normal reasons for being kicked out - unsafe actions like sweeping the line with your muzzle and walking up to your table when the line was cold during seize fire. Don't even dare to argue with the RO. They can ban you from ever setting foot on the range if you screw up really bad.

I remember one time I girl was told to leave...

 She took out what looked like a DAISY BB lever action rifle while she was sitting on the bench behind the yellow line...

The RO was really cool headed and told her not to do that and explained why...

She kept laughing and laughing... Pretty soon 2 more RO's came up and started raising their voices...

She still kept laughing then they told her to leave...

I'm pretty sure the RO's have seen their fill of accidents because of carelessness.... is that how you spell carelessness?

Oh and it was the shorter stalky RO.

The RO's have to YELL to get your attention. It's normally not a derogatory thing... It's for safety.

Seen some d*ck heads though...

 

Accidents do happen. During a cease fire i accidently discharged a pistol while trying to clear it. First mistake i made in 40 years of shooting. Damn i felt stupid. The gun had a decocker and i forgot to use it. The worst part the bullet went thru a box of shotgun shells and the table. The box was half full and it just missed some live rounds and another gun.  So safety is damn important.

All it takes is less than a second.....

Wow.  The guy got kicked off the range for something that started like that?  I am sure it ecalated from there, but still.  None of the RO's have ever rushed me.  I just wait until the next target change.

Exactly.  That's why no handling of firearms when the range is cold.  Guns don't just discharge by themselves (well, at least not normally).  So if someone made a mistake of not properly clearing their guns, then if they aren't handling it, then it can't go off.  All it will take is for one ND and for someone to get shot and the whole range will be at risk to get shut down.  There are people out there just looking for a reason.

I've seen some close calls at IPSC matches.  The guy forgets to drop his mag and then racks the slide to "show clear".  He thinks the gun is clear because he saw the round fly out of the chamber, but since he forgot to drop the mag, it chambered the next round.  Normally the next step after "showing clear" is to pull the trigger to put the hammer down.  Luckily, the RO noticed that the shooter didn't drop the mag and had him clear the chambered round. 

Some people take the RO's commands personally.  They are out there trying to keep everyone safe.  It's when people start taking that stuff personal, like it sounds in the OP's case, where things can go sideways quickly.  Bottom line, the RO is the authority at the range and if you don't comply, you run the risk of being kicked off the range, just like what happened to the guy in the OP. 

On the pistol side, I was next to some military guys and one of them kept pointing his firearm sideways (at his friends, not me) to clear it. The ROs quietly reminded him a few times (twice?) to keep it pointed downrange, but he kept doing it so they warned him loudly 3 times over the PA system, the 3rd time being his final warning before getting kicked out. IMO the ROs were really nice about it and gave him way too many chances considering how many times he put his friends and everyone else behind them in the line of fire. All that guy did was grumble about it to his friends. I don't know what branch they were from but I really hope our nation's military doesn't teach our troops to clear their firearms while pointing it at each other.

Also, they initially showed up with rifle frames that they bought from WGS before getting there. I nicely told them that their frames wouldn't fit in the bracket due to it being a rifle frame and the pistol brackets are a different size. In a rather cocky manner they responded with:
"How do you know? We just got these from a gun store down the street and they said its for this range. Do you work here?"
My answers:
My frame is in the bracket   
Gun stores sell 2 types of frames
I don't work here, but I also have rifles and know the difference between the frames.

A firearm is a lot safer with the action closed than with someone monkeying with the action while people are downrange.

Range safety requries the RO to be loud and clear. If that means yelling because someone might be wearing earpro (or perhaps the RO is a bit hard of hearing)? So be it. As long as it keeps you, me, and anyone else on the range safe. In my opinion, those who feel the need to argue don't belong on the range and deserve the heave-ho.

Listening and understanding what's being said is very important. Simply answering yes to everything is not the point. Again it's a safety issue, handling their firearm while others are downrange is simply unacceptable. All it takes is one mistake and it affects everyone.
